With all due respect to Travis, this jump isn't apples-to-apples from my amateur point of view. The bike, technology, size and sturdiness of the landing ramp, and the lack of objects he had to negotiate on the landing just weren't comparable, in my opinion. Yes, I am biased towards the Knievels.

Look at Evel "bounce" off that rickety landing ramp :(

  2. I miss evil. There's not much in todays world that can compete. Sure there is scrapyard stuff and people break records all the time, but not like he did. I watched most of the jumps on wide world of sports. Even had the evil action figure with the bike. I put that thing through some vicious scenes. Sadly camcorders did not exist for people like me at the time. Although in real life i may not have appreciated him in person, but i didnt go to see his personality jump a bazillion bus’s.

When I was a kid , Evel was the " coolest " guy around ;)
  9. I got to briefly meet Evel as a teen many years ago. My Dad did a little truck business with him as a Branch Manager at an International Harvester dealer in either Topeka or Wichita, Kansas.

Evel came in to the shop to flirt with my wife’s co-worker a few times in Las Vegas.
He crashed and burned there too.

Evil Knevil is the standard by which I measure my heroes from. The bikes Knevil rode had absolutely no business or design intent to be doing what he was using them for. Every jump Evil knew the success of the jump depended mostly on his riding skill and ability and that the bike was going to contribute little if anything. He knew every jump that the possibility of crash and burn was greater than success but be cause a massive throng of fans had paid good cash to come watch him he carried on and did it anyway. This to me is the definition of a hero....a person who stares death in the face and carries on. As much as I like Travis Pastrana, his Indian bike with light years better suspension, brakes, chassis, and engine, should be jumping twice as far as Evils Caesars Palace jump to rise to the same level of heroics.

My brother had this toy, and fortunately, he shared it with me.

I had that too! Also had the van. My cat would always steal the doll from me and carry him around the house.
