I faced the same dilemma, and decided to go with tort. Everyone has black, and in this case the tortoise shell really enhances the look IMHO.
I like tort, speaking as a former tort addict.
But honestly I don't like either. I'd go mint grey green or parchment/cream --match the binding.
I am awaiting my new pickguard for my Tele Deluxe and I had started a thread about foil shielding the cavity and guard...Will you be doing that too and if so, can you post pics of how that looks?
Tort is classier. The black is fine <classic but plain looking> but the Tort jazzes it up a whole notch. White Pearloid would take it to a whole new level.
Tossup with those. I'd go with a creamy white to match the binding and it would be killer!
Of the 2, I would go with the Tortoise shell over the black just because the brown looks better with the cream binding, IMHO.
Telechamp, if that guitar plays and sounds half as good as it looks, it's got to be killer.
The more I look at with the black guard, the more I love it.
Just a visually stunning Tele. That body color, black guard, and tinted neck, just all come together perfectly.
I am wrestling with the same question, I like a black pick guard with gold trim that I saw on another guitar. The original gold pickguard just blends in too much with the color of the wood on my Electromatic, and I almost would like a clear one so you can see more of the wood. But I kind of like the combination of wood grain and tortoise shell, but when the body is painted a solid color pickguard seems to pair better.
On that particular Tele, I wonder what a 3 ply black pickguard would look like with a white layer in the middle of the black plys.
Also, I want my pickguard and truss rod cover plate to match, so I might try to get a gold truss rod cover, or tortoise shell, still not sure. Or maybe I should just not worry about how it looks and get on with playing it.

Thanks for all the replies! Looks like a mixture of opinions - same problem I'm having!
I took a few more shots of the black p-g today, and here's another one of the tort (last pic):
edit: Added a pic of the weight of this one..
I've got five Teles, so you may have a point there..
Black. If it was dark brown tort I could be swayed, but this salami colour clashes with the blue IMO.
I am actually thinking about the foil shielding, although this Daphne Blue Tele is pretty quiet. I've got a roll of DiMarzio copper shielding tape, but haven't used it yet.
Thanks, G5422T - It does sound and play great. And yes, I do really like the aesthetics of this one as well.
Holy Cow, that's a beautiful collection of planks.
We must both have the same taste in colors.
Thanks, G5. They all sound a little different, but they all sound like Teles.. Ha
Ha ha! Best advice yet.
