    Hello

I've been checking around here for a while. I don't think I've seen one mod on a G5122 with standard humbuckers or something like a P94 (Gibson humbucker sized p90) I bet it would sound killer.

    Anyone ever tried it out???

The 5122 comes with standard humbuckers, kind of a Gretsch/Gibson cross.

This guy has P90s in his 5122:

Many people (me included) have put Guitar Fetish Surf 90's into their 5122. It is standard humbucker size but is a single coil styled after a classic DeArmond. It is a little like a P90 but cleaner, yet still gives you a nice woody texture. I love mine.

Here is a clip of the 5122 w/ Surf 90s

Are new pickup rings with one pickup height screw on top/bottom needed to mount . My 5122 pickup rings have 2 screws on top and one on the bottom.
Where does one get these rings that fit the G5122?

    thx

Any standard PAF ring will work on the 5122 if you are looking to use that size pickup. The mounting holes are standard Gibson size.

It's not entirely clear what you are trying to do though.

I would like to try out a set Fralin P-92 pickups. They are sized like a standard humbucker
but are voiced like a P-90.

    My hybrid 5120

Here is my modded/hybrid 5120 "Beverly"
both pups are GFS. Bridge, Hot Nashville. Neck, Surf90's.
Honestly, having this pup combo is like having three guitars. sooner or later I will put a set of Surf90's on my hand made "V". I love the way this guitar sounds in the neck position and it is my main axe.

Then all you need are standard humbucker / PAF rings. It only starts to get tricky when you want to put Filtertron sized pickups in (even then, it isn't that tricky)

Post your results when you do it.

    Nice guitar ! I am modding a 5122
I have ordered black top Filtertrons. Will they fit OK?
I've also ordered an aluminum Bigsby bridge and base.
I'm new at modding... Am I on the right track? Thanks, Indiana Jay

I have the standard "Gretsch-Buckers" in my 5122 and don't have a problem with them. Granted, they are no Filtertron or TV Jones or whatever other flavor. They are okay enough for me. I don't want to tear into things and go past that "point of no return" where I would never be able to return the 5122 back to factory specs.

<See my 5120 avatar. I felt as you did for quite a long time. Then I finally bit the bullet and installed blacktops. They are dirt cheap and if installed correctly they can be easily removed and the Buckers put back in with no visible signs.
Really, really, really big improvement, shoulda done it a whole lot sooner. The GBs are good humbuckers but they are not Filtertrons.

You will need the rings for the blacktops as they are smaller. If you use the Gretschbuckers rings you will have a gap around the pickups. The new rings will require new mounting holes, but the old holes get covered up by the new rings. Also the BTs are a tiny bit wider and you’ll have to Dremel the edges of the pickup holes a very tiny bit to get the BTs in.
Still a very easy mod and easy to reverse w no visible signs.

    Hi Butch,
Thanks for your recent post. I
Have all of the ingredients for
Modding. But my tech basically said what you said in your post.
It is a beautiful guitar in stock
    Condition. I have 2 g3161's so I'm
Going to mod one of them instead.
    Thanks again, Indiana Jay
