The serial number on the headstock has been blacked out and the serial number inside the guitar has been blacked out and a new one taped on. Does anyone know why someone would do this?

This would be typical of a refurb, or a B-stock. If the guitar is otherwise good, it's not necessarily a cause for concern. Unless it was disclosed, though, you may have given too much in trade for it. Refurbs or B-stocks can play and sound as good as a factory-first, but there's no denying they are worth less.

You could also call Gretsch and ask , just supply the serial number . They may even have further info on it .Their phone number is 1-800-856-9801 ( Arizona )

This guitar just popped up for sale on Reverb a few hours ago. I was going to message you with why the serial # was changed but I see you got the answer here. What don't you like about it?
