I'm presuming she was ultra famous all over the world, apart from America then?

I had a Melody Maker colour centre fold poster of her sitting in the lotus position dressed only in a tight lattice stringed leotard. I was 12. My goodness that created an impression. I can recall every detail....

Thanks for this post. I've been a fan for a looooooong time...but have to admit that at first I was put-off by the vocals in Wuthering Heights. Fortunately, I dug a bit deeper and Kate has long been one of my favorite female artists.

In the US this is her only hit:

This one got some attention about the same time.

And this one was a big hit, but most probably didn't know who was singing with Peter Gabriel.

Shes utterly amazing. She was a recluse, so that didn't help. We like a recluse in the UK... it's enigmatic. In the USA, it's career suicide. She did no live shows until a couple of years ago and people were practically selling organs to get tickets. I kept all mine and missed them all, unfortunately. But I did by the album! I will love her stuff till I die. She is the nearest we have to a female prog artist.

Heard OF her, but never really heard her (knowlingly). I actually thought she was more 90s.

Yes Martine all you say about Kate is true but I don't think she ever had any success in US.
If she'd worn a Stetson and sang Nashville pop she probly would have though.
Could have been Achy Breaky Heart instead of Wuthering Heights :)

That is exactly how I think of Kate Bush. I don't know if it's the context in which I've heard her name, or the people who talk about her, but I always assumed she was somewhere in the Alanis Morisette - PJ Harvey - Ani DiFranco continuum. I was surprised to find out she's been around since the late '70s.
