I know some of you know me from Strat-Talk, and some real long-termers might even remember me from TDPRI.

I did some trading this week and picked up a brand spanking new Gretsch Streamliner. I've been wanting a hollow or semihollow guitar for a while, always had my eye on Gretches, and something about this one spoke to me.

Excellent playability, very good fit and finish, sounds great unplugged. If you're looking for stereotypical Gretsch chime and twang, look somewhere else. The Broad'Tron pickups in this line are designed to sit between Filtertrons and PAFs, so they're a bit darker than your typical Gretsch. It has more of a jazz box sound, with a little twang on top. (But I know I'm preaching to the choir here.)

Which was actually the sound I was looking for.

Verdict: I'm one happy camper. Now I just need a wiggle stick for it.

So I had to look up where Enetai is. Looks great! I haven't made it that far west yet (I've only lived in Seattle since July. Moved here from southern Illinois)

I'm not alone in liking the darker jazzy Broad'Trons, am I? I know it's not the typical Gretsch sound, more like PAFs with a little Gretsch twang in the top end, but beautiful - and I think a great addition to Gretsch's tone library.

Welcome. That's a very nice looking burst there. Need to go hear one myself (I have plenty of twang, a bit jazzier sound might be a good addition for me). Wiggle stick? Oh, yeah....

Of all the Streamliners, that model is my favorite. Good solid builds, and I dig the big funky block inlays on those.

I agree. This one has that magical Gretsch thing of sending its acoustic-ness, its hollow-ness, through the amp. It sounds nothing like a solid body. I'm not sure Gretsch hit a home run with the whole Streamliner line, but I do think the g2420 is legit.

Hi Willie, nice to see you here. I haunt the Strat Talk forum on occasion. No, you're not alone. The broad'trons sound very good, not too Gretschy but very good nonetheless. Welcome to Gretsch Talk.

PS: You do understand it is not your last Gretsch, merely a gateway to a wonderful world?

Why Willie, that's a very pretty guitar. Wait until you discover the green ones... Ooooo.... hot, man!

    Abandon hope. :)

So I made the mistake of killing a few minutes in another shop close to my house.
They had this Ibanez, one I've had my eye on for a while, for $299.

Knowing curiosity killed the cat, I picked it up and played it, knowing there was a chance I'd regret the Streamliner purchase.

A handful of chords and picked lines later my cognitive dissonance was resolved.

I had made the right choice. The Ibanez is a looker, but the Streamliner is just as pretty and more of a player. Sorry, Ibanez.

Green is cool, but the orange 6120s (Setzer, Heat) and the White Falcons are the ones I dream about.
