Greg Ginn, Paul Westerberg, Keef, Tom Verlaine, Dave Grohl. Not a bad list. All have played Dan Armstrong Ampeg plexiglass guitars at one time or another.

Looking pretty badass, you saucy old bugger.....

Sooooo when this Chinese knockoff (Champeg? Chan Charmstrong?) turned up on Gumtree for less than 200 quid, I had to jump in because then I am that gnarly cool badass as well.

It's, um, surprisingly alright. The fret ends are a bit sharp, but I can do that. The wraparound bridge is a bit high profile, so even when cranked down to the body the actions a bit high, but I can change it. The pickup that the previous owner fitted is a mushy heavy metal distortion monkey (he was in a Foo Fighters tribute band), but I can swap that.

It weighs about the same as a Chevrolet though, and there's not much I can do about that except marvel at the supernatural sustain and response it gives while gravity fuses my spine one-vertebra-at-a-time and I run barefoot down the high street screaming "I'M ALIIIIIIVE!!!" all the way to bikram cocking yoga.

But it's not black... I suppose you'll have to wear all black every time you play it?

Congrats though, I always dug the see through aspects.

    Congrats again sir!

I wanted a plexi Strat like Nile's ,but these days the weight would be just too much for my aul back.

Is plexi-glass a good sound wood?

I used to go see Black Flag whenever they came around back in the late 80s.

Greg G always played his Ampeg DA!

    Congrats buddy; I like it!

I always thought guitars like that had a cool factor, but I gave up a Peavey Classic 50 2X12 because it was too heavy for me - lift the amp, go to the chiropractor the next day. I know this isn't the same thing, but strapping that on for hours would be too much for me. I hate getting older.

Back in the ‘70s I was shopping for a Les Paul (it was the law back then), and the salesdude at West L.A. Music tried to sell me one of the original ones of those. Compared to a ‘70s LP, the weight was comparable. But I bought an SG instead, trading shoulder soreness for neck dive.

Congrats on yours, though. I’d love to show up at a gig with one of those.

Now that I think about it, on that same trip to the big city (I lived an hour north of there at the time), a salesman at Nadine’s tried to sell me a new Ibanez Artist, but I still went for the SG ($325 at Betnun Music on Larchmont). In retrospect, I wish I could have bought all 3. Didn’t actually buy a Les Paul for another 25 years, and sold the SG to pay for my first Setzer Sig model, which was my first Gretsch, so maybe it was meant to be, and certainly all for the better

Lots of folks use Dunlop 65 guitar polish on their instruments.

    You could use Windex.
