    Hey folks!
Reviewed one of the newer Electromatics since they revamped the line back in 2016. This one is in Fairlane Blue -- enjoy!

    I agree.
I found a used 5120 at guitar center this weekend. It had those big chrome gretsch pick ups. Just didn’t have that bite the Filter’Trons do. The f holes didn’t have the binding either. Just looked unfinished.

I first tried a Compton bar bridge which is a fine bridge, but had intonation issues with the pinned bridge set up. The roller bridge has traditional individual string intonation adjustment screws.
What gauge and strings are you using?

    Nice!
So I strung it up with 10s, but I feel like it could use 11s. I may get the classic Gretsch spacer roller bridge for it at some point. There is that clip in the demo which also had the flatwounds, not sure the guage, they were pretty heavy though.

Yeah, my buddy used to have one of the old black ones. It was a solid guitar, but I think quality wise more in line with the current streamliners. I'm really pleased that Gretsch improved the Electromatics in so many ways, making it a much better middle ground model. The streamliners are really cool too, I'm trying to get my hands on one to shoot a comparison video.

    Nice review, Jack.

I have a couple of Electromatics (a 5420 and a 543TG two tone red/white Pro Jet), and I consider them to be very nice guitars. I haven't done any mods to mine, although I am aware that with a few minor mods, these guitars can really shine.

That said, I also picked up a used 2013 Chet Akins Tennessee Rose about a year and a half ago, and it is an absolute dream to play.

Agree with you on the pickups, but not on the f-holes. I actually prefer the lack of binding on it. It looks distinct, not that it's trying too hard to be a pro-line but not quite being it. The Electromatics are proper instruments, but they're pretty much the same as the prolines in looks. I liked how the older ones were their own thing.

I normally use 9's on my other guitars. I do a lot of bending. Tried out the 11's and I was uncomfortable with the thicker gauge. I decided to use the 10's on my Gretsch. The 10's can handle the Bigsby and I can still do all my bending. Just depends on your playing style.

    Cool.
I grew up in OOB, my mom lives in Saco. I’m up in Portland.
Great to see another Mainer here!
    Nice playing, by the way.

I was OOBHS class of 2000. My dad still lives there so I go down there often. I like to avoid it this time of year.

Yeah definitely - I play in OOB this time of year and its such a zoo. I remember when we lived there, we used to always hope 4th of July would fall on rainy Wednesday. If it was a hot weekend day, the whole town was like a parking lot.
