An Excelsior this time, 12 watts, all tube with a 15" speaker. These are very cool amps, i had one before and let it go, been regretting it ever since. 20200112_143453.jpg seems like they only sold these for a year or two and then stopped making them, you don't see them around much anymore. I snapped this up soon as i saw it.

Awesome man! I really love the couple of these I've tried for swampy, lofi sounds. They struck me almost like a much more portable version of my Gemini VI.

    Congrats!

Congratulations and welcome to the club.
I like them, too. And now I really like mine.

I replaced the stock speaker with a 15” Eminence Legend , changed the stock tubes to Groove Tubes and had the Bright/ Dark tone switch removed and a potentiometer installed - now I can use a full spectrum tone sweep instead of the Dark/ Bright switch.

Minor and inexpensive speaker, tube, and tone expanding improvements turned a good , inexpensive amp into an extraordinarily good and expensive sounding amp.

I paid $199.99 for a new one on clearance in around 2011.

Just out of curiosity, what type and value of pot did you use? Thinking about picking one of these up, and that sounds like a cool mod.

Congrats on a cool and not too common amp! Like mine alot too, despite not using it that much. Big sound from the 15 inch speaker. Good tremolo effect. Ultra cool looks. A lot of these end up missing the logo (mine is mint so far). I was surprised to see one in the collection at Sun Studios in Memphis. I'm told mostly for it's aesthetics, but it does get used occasionally too.

Thanks guys, it's really a cool design, getting my Pop Staples groove on.
It reminds me of an old Airline or Harmony amp. I'll probably do the tone pot mod but other than that i'll most likely leave it alone. The stock speaker sounds good to me.

Yeah, they've held their value well, matter of fact is they bring more used than you paid;)

Natch, in fact you can see one peaking out at the bottom of my pic.
If all goes well it may be getting a El Pesco played through it soon. I cleared off some room on the board to fund this amp, lets see what the taxman says;)

Best bang for the bucks of all Fender amp line.
With a proper speaker (not that the stock one is bad, but sounds a bit dull to me) you got an all-tube amp with great brown sound and manageable volume.
I recorded a whole album in my spare room with this one, volume knob at 3 o'clock plus boost for solos. Not a complain from the neighborhoods.

Dang, I'm going to have to pull mine out and put the tubes back in.

It's been a while, but I remember getting a great sound from it with my RI -58 Gent. Fun combination to do some picking with.

    Hi Jeff,
    I don’t know this information.
I have a fabulous old school amp guy here in Durham.
He did the mod for me: $48.50.
I have a 50’s Fender Tweed, a Blackface Fender, and two Silverface Fender amps. This Excelsior holds it own with these amps with the mods I did. It is full, rich, and very sensitive to strum and pick applications.
It has a delicious breakup at around 8, and an incredibly lush Vibrato. In my opinion, the Eminence Legend 15” is the secret weapon; the tone mod is essential.

Yep. I’ve done the tone mod myself and it’s very effective, although I found myself use it full bass with bridge pickups and full treble with neck pickups for the best results.
Other than that, like in other tweed amps I tried, the tone mod full maxed to treble give an extra spark to breakup point that’s really pleasant, a sort of treble boost type effect.
I bought the full kit on eBay for something like 30 euros (Brownface Fender Knob included) My tech did it to my amp and I couldn’t be more pleased about it.
Other than that, he modified the vibrato to enable it to reach more speed and that enhanced his effectiveness as well.
I don’t know if you like it or not, but I’m a great user of feedback into songs (the only thing I’ve learned listening to Pete Townshend all these years :D) and nothing gives you a nice, rich and controlled feedback better than a 15” speaker and a thin hollow body. ;)
