Buddy of mine said he wanted a scratch built guitar from me and it had to look like an abused early butterscotch tele with maple neck and black guard.

I had a decent piece of swamp ash that was nice and light. I've not done a one piece maple neck yet, so although it's not period correct, this one will have a two piece.

Drew the outline and bandsawed it out

I actually used the template to rout the shape this time.

Got the sealer on it and into the spray booth.

    0012.jpg

    Started carving the neck.

    0013.jpg

    Rattle can ReRanch butterscotch nitro

    0014.jpg

Plus a few coats of clear nitro.

    0016.jpg

Vintage amber tint for the neck initial coats

    0017.jpg

Polish it up to look pretty.

    0019.jpg

So I can start making it look ugly .

Here's a fun game/ Tape off the entire fretboard for leveling/crown/polish/lacquer removal and make the smallest waste pile possible.

I still have some work to do on the body, I did a setup on it and it plays and sounds great.

    Cool!

Although i like'em a little less reliced myself,i'm more of a NOS guy when it comes to aging.

I have a love hate relationship when it comes to relicing,i hate that its fake ,but i love how they feel.:)

Sure looks good 'n' ancient, just missing the mandatory cigarette burns on the headstock!

Great relic job! Looks like it would be rejected by Goodwill as unsaleable. :D

While I'm not a relic fan, that doesn't look cheesy like most do. It looks like a well used and loved guitar. Nice job!

Nice build David. If you really want to go over the top you can use the vinegar trick for the large patches of bare wood.

If I had your skills, I probably wouldn't buy another solid body guitar ever again. I'd just make what I wanted!

Yeah, but then you end up with a boatload of guitars lol. It's for sure shifted my focus, the only guitars I think about buying now are the real vintage items... usually fixer-uppers :)

While I am certainly not a personal fan of relic guitars, you did a magnificent job of making it look authentic.

holy crap. I want this so bad...sorry for bumping an old post, but this is so exactly what I want...relic looks real instead of slapped on...been wanting a butterscotch tele for years, but this is just another level.
