After 40+ years of playing guitars and keyboards in various bands and projects I have become a proud first-time Gretsch owner. I saw and fell in love with a walnut 5422TG that I had seen whilst picking up a new amp and decided that I simply had to add it to my collection! Having tried a few in a some guitar stores near me I played one that just had that certain ‘something’ and it was pretty quickly coming home with me. The only complication was that I was also very taken with it’s 12-string sister in black that was sat next to it in the store! This also looked great, but the action was on the high side and the intonation was all over the place. On the flip side, the guitar was for sale at a great price, which I suspect was because it had been in the store a while - most likely because it wasn’t that great to play in its current state. After checking out that everything else seemed ok with it I decided to take a punt that all the problems could be resolved and I finally succumbed to the inevitable. Two new Gretsch guitars! The 6 string was pretty good as it came, but after a sting change, full set-up and a bit of work on the nut slots it is an absolute beauty! My friendly local guitar tech gave the same treatment to the 12-string, although I have to say that this one needed a bit more work, as the nut slots were way too high and the saddles were all over the place! However, I’m pleased to say that my leap of faith was justified as this too now plays beautifully. Very pleased and very happy to have finally joined the Gretsch world!
