In an audio version of the dress internet meme, what do you hear the person speaking in the clip saying, Laurel or Yanny?

    Here's the story behind it:

Yesterday, I knew for certain it said Laurel. This morning it switched.

I heard yanny on a cell phone speaker, but with headphones I heard laurel. Its pretty clear once you put headphones on, but that article was right, its a low quality recording. Maybe that's why when I learn songs by ear I'm up a whole step half the time lol

Laurel. The sound is kind of garbled to begin with, and the device you hear it on makes a difference. Considering the size of the speakers in cell phones and IPads and computers, I'm not surprised that it sounds differently to folks.

Edit: just listened to it on on my daughter's cell phone and heard Yanni. Hearing it thru headphones, you can tell the voices are overlaid, the low one saying laurel, the high one, Yanni, and both computer generated. The recording is designed to confuse.

Like "the dress", it all depends on context and contrast. YMMV.

At first I didn't hear anything, then I realised the sound was muted

When I switched the sound on, the first twice I could have swore I heard Yarrel before it cleared and became Laurel.

It's totally gamed. On my iphone speaker, the voice is high pitched and sounds NOTHING like Laurel.

But on my iphone through good headphones, it's a very low resonant voice saying "Laurel".

Then back to my iphone and the voice is suddenly low pitched and sounds like "Laurel".

I suspect there's a trick being played here.

Yes - I think there are two voices.

With the dress thing, I used photoshop to analyze the color and it was specifically not the color they said it was. That too was a hoax.

I think you are right. I thought there must be some pseudo random or real-time clock variation encoded in the MP3, but I suppose two voices could do it.

I would need to spend more time than I care to spend to figure it out.

This comes not long after news of the possibility hiding voice commands in music.

Here's an article with a little parametric filter you can slide back and forth until you hear one or the other:

Clearly the articulation for both exists in the soundbyte.

When I first heard this via a television speaker, I heard Yanni....playing it now, through my stereo system, I hear Laurel....when I visit the nytimes website and play with the parametric, I start hearing Yanni at just barely right of center.

On CBC’s The World at Six podcast they swept the EQ from high to low and you could hear the layers Yanni, Laurel then Yanni and Laurel again.

I played it backwards and heard "Paul is dead". Could also be from the allergy pills. I may never know for sure.
