Never going back again! Tweed amps all up for sale kinda turned! This Princeton Reverb handwired project has totally flipped the way I think about Blackface amps. I thought they were all about glassy shimmer and brittle highs, but this one growls like a junkyard dog. With a T-Armond on the bridge, a hair of 'verb and the bass around 8, this thing is proper neighbour pleasing, enough to get them banging on the wall in appreciation.

In all seriousness, I can see why the Princeton Reverb has been a favourite for such a long time. This one, with the Stokes mod, over-rated transformers and 12" speaker might be quite a way from a standard PR, and knocks spots off the re-issue I tried.

The build was a little more difficult than anything I've tried to date, but really it's only just a few more wires and components. Go slow, gt the job done right. Totally Red Oktober silent on tickover, a bit of normal tube hiss when cranked, it looks like the oversized metal film resistors have done the job right. I also used a star ground, and earthed all the pots to one place.

I are a very happy bunny right now.

The Princeton Reverb, brownest of all blackface amps, is my favorite blackface amp. It has been my favorite since I figured out one was. It was always my reference tone to test new guitars. At least, when every guitar store had one.

I had one for a while, a reissue. The guy I bought it from had a Vintage 30 in it. Which made it almost as heavy as the '69 Vibrolux Reverb I had at the time. Kinda doubling things up... It was slightly warmer in tone, but I also had a '63 Vibroverb Reissue and it trumped them both.

I love Princeton Reverbs, but I'm still a tweed/brownface guy....

I always love seeing that red sparkle jet. It’s my favorite of the sparkles.

Nice combo. You need a new colour cable though.

It's a Tube Amp Doctor kit from Germany, essentially a Mojotone kit.

Cool report! I'm glad you are digging it! And I'm impressed that you actually built it! I gots ta git me sum more skillz yo!

Meanwhile like I mentioned in an other thread I'm really enjoying my Princeton Clone built by Rick Hayes, a Vintage Sound 15, and I think that some kind of good Princeton is a must have. I also have his Deluxe Reverb clone the VS 22, which also kills.

    ^looks super well done!

There be Tweed Amps at Bargain! :) I finally got mine growling the way I want by using a low input and jump wiring the high inputs together.
