In nearly every place that I've ever lived, I've heard the remark, "If you don't like the weather, just wait five minutes."

It really has been cold in the US. I just saw these images in Finnish web news. They had explanations too, but let these pictures speak for themselves.

Well, darn it anyway. Cold water pipe that feeds the kitchen (dishwasher and sink) burst in the basement wall at about 11:45 AM. Whatever idiot plumbed the place laid it at least partly across foundation concrete – you can see it in the basement sump pump room, along with all kinds of desperate attempts to mitigate the inevitable cold problem. I added more insulation this winter because I knew this was coming, but it froze yesterday and went blooey today. Luckily I know which valves are which, because I labelled them all in 2017 when we moved in.

Plumber will be over tonight and an inspector from the insurance company is on his way right now. I’ve mopped everything up and moved stuff out of the way in our rec room so hopefully not a major disaster, although I know that water is freezing in the walls right now.

But what are you going to do? Cowboy up, that’s what.

Sorry to hear that Slim. Our old house had a bump out where the kitchen sink was, so the pipes were unprotected by the walls, essentially open to the outside save for the siding. Poorly insulated to top it off. The pipes froze during the previous worst cold snap to this one but luckily we were home that day, noticed the sink wasn't draining and called to get it taken care of before the pipes burst.

The water stopped running during my morning shower. The City of Eagan confirmed that there was a water main break on a cross street near me. For a minute or two (while reviewing this thread) there was a coming bunch of noise coming from from the bathroom. Just some air venting. Although, still hopeful, not fixed yet.

    We are brothers in law.

Then there’s my former mother in law. The flying monkeys had rabies. :)

WOW! I must be blessed. My wife and I just turned over 42 years, and to top it off, we both got great in-laws out of the deal.

She could give rabies to a corpse. :)

Consider yourself blessed. Marriage can be wonderful, but when it doesn’t, a bit of dark humor comes out. :)

I've won more than I ever put into it---$100. Lotteries are just a regressive tax on the poor.

I'm glad you lucked out Slim. I've always maintained that marriage is an honourable institution - if you don't mind living in an institution.

With two grandsons and four cats in the house it does seem a bit like an asylum.

PS. For the first time in weeks I can actually see my lawn! It got into the high 30s today.

The City got it fixed late last night. Everything's good.

Hang in there Alberta_Slim. I've had a bunch of adventures with water on the floor and furnace failures in my 39 years here in the northern climate. Keep anything of value off the floor. You'll be good.
