It IS gonna be tuff for me to defy orange!!!! After all, it IS a Gretsch!!!!
Mega congrats on struggling less than me for a shorter period of time. Will look forward to your NGD and initial thoughts.

The correct answer to the "Which Gretsch should I get?" question has always been the same throughout history.

Inevitably, the correct answer is "One of each."

    :D

One of each might be a little out of reach for me, but I've got one hollow, one semi-hollow, and one solid. Does that count?

Yes it is. I saw people here suggest them enough so I had to get it. Best upgrade possible and I think is an absolute necessity for these.

The latest generation of 5420s have a lot of improved features like better look, GraphTec nut etc. The give away is a slimmer headstock that doesn't say "ELECTROMATIC" vertically (it is on the pickguard under "GRETSCH"). All the new ones should reflect this but there should be a pretty active used market too.

GraphTec nut on new ones. Personally, I think all the difference are worth a couple hundred dollrs if you dont want to mod.

I’ll know in a week. I either bought it or got ripped off. We’ll see if the truck shows up.

Awesome! I'm rooting for option A (the truck showing up). Post pics when it arrives, and let us know how you like it.

That's more or less 'my story'.
I ended up with a new 5420 in Cadillac Green back in January 2013 - where did the time go? - after spending an hour in the guitar shop, jamming along with their radiol unplugged. Went in for orange, came away with dark green - no regrets.
The 5420 is an excellent - make that THE perfect - way to dip a toe in the water of "the Gretsch experience".
The 'centre block' models are fine and dandy, but for me, you may as well throw a pair of Filtertrons in a 335. For me, when you come from 'somewhere else', Gretsch is all about hollow, archtop, Bigsby and Filtertrons. If the bug bites, then go full fat 6120 or centre blocks or whatever...
It's like if someone asked me to recommend a first Fender, I would point them at a Baja Tele or Mex Classic Strat, NOT an AVRI Jaguar.
First Gretsch? 5420, everytime... or maybe a 5435 Pro Jet.
Regarding the Bigsby, there's a view that it has an influence on sustain and tone, not necessarily detrimental, so even if you don't use it - I don't - it's not necessarily a bad thing to have.

Great read @somebodyelseuk ! LOts of great reads in this. Special thanks to @section2 .
Well...this just didn't go as planned at all!!!!
This journey started because I wanted a Casino. I had a 330 and miss it. I have 335's and love em. Like I said, a couple of buds I respect infected me with the fever. I haven't had a day off since I caught it. I've never even held one. I have a couple of things in the closet that need to go away. I either wanted to do a CL trade or a GC trade in. I have a good relationship with my GC manager. I was planning on loading up tomorrow and see where the day took me. I did want to at least touch one and see! Last night I'm doing the late night Reverb cruising thing. I see what I considered to be a steal. Next thing I know, I look up at the top right corner of my screen and that little basket up in the corner has a 1 in it.
