I knew NOS tubes had gone crazy, but...

Everyone knows prices of NOS have risen steadily over the years. I was curious how insane things had gotten and checked some sites. Nevertheless I gasped stumbling over this one.... a matched pair of 300B...10K!

LOL, that would need to be one heckuva important amp to me to drop 10K on power tubes.

I've gone ~ $90 a tube on a pair of Tung Sol 6V6s but damn...

Those tubes might be brittle and have a bad vacuum after 65 years. How would you like to pay $10,000 and have them short out in a week? You'd have to be crazy and rich to buy them.

Yea, well, the 1930s go for $19,999k:

Ridiculous. Who really pays that? The new production ones out of Georgia are $1400 a pair. That's for new, US made tubes that are arguably as good as or better than the NOS stuff. Not a tube I need thankfully as $1400 sounds steep enough.

The real kicker for me is the stuff I can afford. A decade or so ago, I paid $21 for a few NOS JAN GE 12AX7 with matched triodes. They're now $89. And nothing lasts like these tubes.

I‘ve got a NOS Philips 12AX7. Sounds like a complete different tube compared to modern AX7‘s. Superb. But we‘re talking here about 60-70€.

I didn't think tubes could be made in the USA anymore because of EPA rules.

True - this is the trap of the NOS tubes... NOS tube doesn't imply goodness, it can be dead or dying right out of the box.

That said, I have a little stock of VT25/10Y from RCA and Sylvania that are still in perfect condition, matching accurately their specs, despite they date from WWII or late 30's (these tubes were used in the trasmitters of the US WWII bombers along with 211/VT4C). They exactly look like these ones below :

Never in the world I would pay such a sum for a pair of NOS WE-300B !:eek::eek:

    A+!

Wow it appears that they have been making these tubes in the USA like you said. I wonder how they got the permit to make these. I heard a long time ago that tube manufacturing was not allow in the USA anymore because of the toxic materials that are used in the tube making process - strange indeed.

I just sold a few and I am happy with the return. Bought them almost ten years ago for much less and they were just taking up space in a drawer.

I’ve only got one NOS tube left: a JAN Philips 5751 preamp tube from 1983.

All my amps have JJ tubes in them now. Maybe not the most inspiring sound compared to NOS, but I haven’t had one go bad in the 10 years since I started using them.

I dont know anything about EPA or tube manufacturing but I would not be surprised if laws affected previous means of manufacture, and I would be surprised if it is completely illegal to make any tubes now - my guess is the laws may make it less competitive or infeasible financially.
