As pleased as I am with the Broadtron pickups in my G2420T, I'm wondering what an even more Gretschy set of pickups would be bring out of this beast, or its twin if I get so enthused as to purchase another one.

Typical G tone pickups don't come cheap and from the get go I'm not keen on spending a $300 pickup set for a $500 guitar (but it may happen though). Still I thought I'd ask you guys if you knew of any inexpensive gretschy pickup set with less of a PAF tone signature as the broadtrons. My epxerience with less expensive pickups is that some are very underrated and can make wonders on a nicely tweaked geetar.

Thanks for chiming in. Any thoughts welcome!

Maybe a used pair of filtertrons? They run around $100.

I found Blacktops great in a projet, but too middy in a hollow body. They just got mushy. Could be a poor match with my tweed deluxe, which is already very middy too.

    Blacktops.

Very fair assessment. The amp in question is always a huge factor.

I just put some GFS surf 90's in an Ibanez, and was really surprised at how much I liked them. For the price, they are great.

Nuther vote for Surf 90's, they cost around $80.00 for the pair and totally transformed my 5120. I was kinda like you and thought it sounded fine stock but AYE CARUMBA! these things made it pop. You gotta like big single coil tone though, and the buzzyness that comes with it.

I will sell you my pair of Blacktops for $50. Let me know. They were never used since TV Jones replaced them right after purchase. You would have to pay for postage though.

Plenty of soul food for the thought on this plate. Thanks a bunch gang!
It's a tad early to buy said pickups but thank you also for the offers, great deals for sure!

BTs are excellent but even better imo are Gretsch HS filtertrons.
Cheap and THE 2nd best pups ever made after TV Jones Classics imo.
They sound very similar for a 1/3 of the price

And I also have a set of BTs unused sitting in a box if anyone is interested :)

Don't Broadtron pickups have the same footprint and fitting as a standard PAF? How easy is it to switch to Blacktops?

Oil City pickups in the UK offer a Filtetron type pickup and I think they do it in a standard PAF sized version. They are cheaper than TV Jones, but not by much.

If you're really talking low budget, look up the Warman pickups Retro Rockers.

Can someone please confirm if Broadtrons are a standard type humbucker design or a new el cheapo Gretsch filtertron made for Streamliners ??

When I tested out a few Streamliners months ago they didn't sound like a Filtertron .... or a Gretsch for that matter but......... still sounded excellent for a cheap guitar imo

I've played my brothers G2420 & the Broadtrons sound great but more Les Paul sounding than Gretsch. A good sound though..
