All I know is a 6121 with TV Jones Classics > Mystery Brain > Marshall 1974X is a one generous slice of sonic heaven.

You know what? This thread made me realize that having a Gretsch sound great through a Fender it’s easy money. Too easy.
From now on I’ll stick on my plexi Hiwatt sound again. Nevermind the sound guy. :D

I believe it. I read a post on the MarshallForum today about a guy who hated his DSL15 until he played it thru an open back 2x12. He'd been using a closed back 1x12 and was getting ready to sell the amp.

I find if I don't sound good thru one amp or another, it's usually not a problem with the amp.

I use the Marshall Origin 20 watt combo. I upgraded the output transformer to a 30 watt Trainwreck style from, and popped in a 5751 in V1 and some KT66's from my tool chest. Great amplifier beforehand, amazing amplifier afterward. Lightweight, low cost, all the tone you could ever want :)

Have you tried it thru a 2x12 extension cab?

hehehe imo this is a really silly youtube video.
It's silly because ALL amps and guitars sound the same on youtube and it's totally pointless to attempt to show it on youtube.

However, once you get off youtube and test amps live I do agree with the guy that speaker cabinets make a big difference. Anyone who owns a tube head can test this themselves by just plugging the same head into different speakers :)

I can tell you that, with the right settings (mids to neutral, presence at 3 o'clock), playing an Hiwatt head through an open Fender cab with a C12Q Jensen could take you very close to some Blackface-like sound.
I suppose it should be the same with some JTM45.
Like pmac11 said above doesn't matter what you play, the sound is in the fingers.

You can play any guitar thru any amp. You do you.
You might find some incredible sonic surprise.
It's all about the search for "That Tone"!

I first played my Gretsch through my Marshall Mini Jubilee (and 2x12 Greenback loaded closed cab) as from my new guitar post below. I've tried it through my 'Plexi' (Marshall SV20H) and the same cab, but prefer the Gretsch through the MJ. The MJ has a great clean tone as well as the various over drive/distortion sounds, so much so that I don't necessarily play through my Fender '64 Custom Deluxe reverb if I want a clean tone.

Before I changed the pick ups to TV Jones ones:

This guy with a Falcon through a Plexi stack (1971)

Got the Gretsch/Marshall sound stuck in my head after seeing him live.

I assume in five pages, this guy has been mentioned. But in case not, I'll say, it's been done with some success...
