I've known the name for years but just stumbled over his music via the soundtrack to the 1955 film "Blackboard Jungle."

There's some Great Gretsch Sound going on here:

Some of his album covers how Sal playing a fancy Gretsch archtop with a floating pickup, but I seem to recall his signature gretsch had a single Dyna in the neck, and Jaguar Tan finish. No Bigsby :(

Anybody know much more about Sal and/or his rig? That amp in Bleeker Street Blues (video above) is crying for mercy.

Here's another weird fact for you---1955's "Blackboard Jungle" was the first film for Jameel Farrar---now known as Jamie Farr; Cpl. Klinger on M*A*S*H.

You can play any style on any guitar. It's a hands that holds the guitar that brings out the style

I'm just mocking the jazz snobs that turn their nose up to anything not played on a Gibson or luthier built archtop. They are equally constrained in their styles as Rockabilly guys. They're afraid to think outside of the box, and breathe some fresh life into their genres. That's probably why we praise guys like Setzer, and RHH around here. Both dudes who weren't scared to bring in different influences.

I had a blonde '58 filtertron Streamliner and it was totally a jazzer. All it had was a mudswitch and a vol knob.

Thanks for posting that, aside from the tone, very nice solo style without too many notes for notes sake. Also lovely breathy saxophone solo in there too. I might have to buy that albumn.

Regrettably! I've almost got a '57 payed off though, DeArmond and tone knob on this one. Never crazy bout the mudswitch.

I saw Sal play in my Local Sam Ash in White Plains NY about 25 years ago. Sal was up there in age, but put on a great show.

Hell yeah, congrats bud! I'm not too hot on mud switches, either. I just try to stay away from the one on my 6120.

So true. It's like, if it isn't the warmest neck PAF in the world, then it isn't real jazz. What would happen if you played bright jazz with a single coil? Would the world turn into Mad Max overnight maybe?
