Hi all , new to your fourm.

I just picked up a new 5420TG 135th Anniversary model, I'm curious if anyone knows what kind of production numbers are on this guitar? I have noticed too that they only seem to be avlible in two colors, a Candy Apple red, and a two tone dark cherry metallic/casino gold. Both supporting gold hardware. Mine is all black. Does anyone else have an all black guitar? Also this guitar is supposedly to have a ebony fretboard where as mine does not. Another thing I noticed is this guitar does not have the built in staplocks that my other 5420 has. Anyone else have this guitar and can confirm it supposed to have them?

I know it is not a Chinese knockoff as i purchased it new from long and mccuade( big box music store in Canada)

I have the same guitar. It did come with the Gretsch strap buttons but it's not an anniversary it was just a special run. I also have an all burgundy red w/gold hardware made the same year 2018. As far as I know only the Anniversary is the Burgundy front and gold sides.

Welcome to the group and nice guitar. I have a CAR/Gold hardware but it isn't the 135th. I thought about the anniversary but liked this better. I believe SWoody is correct, the only 5420 135th is Dark Cherry Metallic/Casino Gold.

    Welcome to Gretsch-Talk Gretschlove 1980!

SWoody is right that this is a special run 5420T. I have a special run edition, too, but mine is "Snow Crest White" with the gold hardware. Don't be too disappointed that it's not an anniversary edition, though, because that black and gold combination is beautiful, and the 5420 model is a very fine Gretsch guitar that you'll have loads of fun playing.

I have the impression that only the dark cherry metallic and gold 5420 is the "135th" anniversary 5420, although they certainly made many other 5420s that same year.

Looks nice. Not sure why yours doesn't have the Gretsch strap locks when new.

Welcome to Gretsch Talk fellow Canucker! Nice guitar. I would sweat about the strap buttons too much. You'll want to put a set of real straplocks on it anyway if you value the guitar. The Gretsch strap locks work great right up until the moment they don't and your beautiful guitar heads for the floor. For the sake of $30 put some real strap locks on her.

    And enjoy - that's a beautiful guitar!

    Welcome!
Tony's right, the Gretsch strap locks are known for unscrewing themselves and coming off at inopportune times.
    Replace them with something better..

Welcome & congrats on the awesome 5420!
Did you buy the guitar brand new? It seems strange that it doesn’t have the Gretsch strap buttons?
But as it’s been mentioned they do have a tendancy to work loose.
I’ve always fitted Schaller strap locks to my Gretsch guitars..

It looks like to me from the pic it does have a factory strap button.

Nice guitar! If you prefer the standard Gretsch strap knobs (many of us do), get some and install them should not set you back that much (not sure why it came without them).

If you're in the Toronto area, drive out to the 'Shwa and I'll GIVE you a pair. I have about 15 sets that I pulled off my Gretschs after the Country Clubs lid down my leg when the Gretsch strap lock let go.

It's funny it actually only has one, at the bridge end. And it actually has a pointed screw that goes into the wood, not a nut/ bolt type like it should. Find it odd

Here's a pic, knob seems to look affixed to the screw....

Gretschlove, that's the original Gretsch strap knob. Apparently, the knob was tightened too much so now turning it backs out the entire screw. With some pliers, gently hold the screw and turn the knob counter clockwise. It should free up. Then all you have to do is decide if your want to use the original knob. It all depends on how you will be using your guitar.

My local mom & pop guitar shop had the candy apple red version. Beautiful, but I just can't live with a red guitar. I asked if there was a sunburst or black version. They looked it up, apparently on the Gretsch site. Nope. OK, I walked away. Several months later I'm buying strings in a Guitar Center, & there is that same model in black. It's been sitting in my bedroom ever since. Gold on black just works really well for me.
