There's a graphite nut on eBay for a 6120. Would that also fit a 5120?
Dont see any reason why not - Its never going to be as good as a custom made nut - but then its not forced to be perfect for a 6120 - as specs are different and change. - but it will fit and should work pretty good - if you go for it it would be nice to hear what difference the graphite makes to the sound/tone. Hope this helps - Steve.
Your G5120 has a graphite nut on it!
If any minor modifications must be made to the nut can it be filed down?
I've just measured the nut on my 5120 and my 6120 - and they are dam near exactly the same - best bet is to get exact measurements from the seller - and compare with your guitar - I fitted a brass nut for a 6120 into my 5124 and it fitted like a glove!
The item description says "New graphite nut, slotted and profiled, 1 3/8" string spacing, measures 1 23/32" long, 1/4" wide and 5/16" tall. Perfect for many Gretsch guitar models."
Are those the measurements you got? I don't have a tape measure for some reason, sorry.
I'd need that in metric to make sense! - Time to get the ruler out I think!
Yes, they will file, sand and polish to a shine. I've installed plenty of them including from straight blanks. They are really easy on nut files because of the graphite.
Mine measures 42mm x 6mm wide x 7mm high
Here's my new graphite nut from Black Rider.
