Got a G5220 yesterday after reading and watching reviews about the guitar on Google and Youtube.

My first impression: This guitar is f***ng amazing!

I have always been skeptical about Chinese made guitars but man I was wrong specially with this one. This has the tone that I was looking for which none of my more expensive guitars can create! Except for a minor fret buzz on the B string which I was able to fix in minutes, everything about this guitar suits my playing: from the weight to the fretboard. And the sustain, man each string rings forever!

Happy with the purchase that I'm looking at other models now. lol

Welcome to GT. 5220's are great guitars.

    Welcome to Gretsch-Talk Bluesman68!

Gretsch's budget Electromatic line, in general, is a very good quality line, so it comes as no surprise to me that you are blown away. I played a used Electromatic Pro Jet at my local music store a few years back, and I was blown away by the quality and the sound, too. I didn't buy it at the time, but it haunted me until I did finally buy a new Pro Jet.

    Congrats on your Electromatic Jet!

Very nice; I have my eyes on the dark cherry metallic version, but I'm a bit concerned about reports of the stained walnut fretboards leaving black fingers. Perhaps you might let us know if you experience this? Thanks.

    Congratulations & Welcome Bluesman68 !

The Casino Gold version is super-nice, but unavailable in LH... :(
Fortunately, Gretsch issued the Dark Cherry Metallic for us Lefties. :)
    So that's the one I have (G5220LH-DCM), on which I added a Bigsby B3LH tremolo :

Moreover, looking to the guitars hung on your wall, I'm not suprised that you find That Great Gretsch amazing ! :D

In my personal case, no issue with the stained walnut fingerboard. I did several reharsal and one concert with my G5220 : no problem of black fingers at all.

But I must confess that my hands are rather dry, and it take me years to oxidize a string set, so it may be an explanation...

    A+!

I'm afraid this is true. :)

After playing the guitar for hours non-stop, my fingertips were black!

Made a mistake of putting lemon oil on the fretboard before playing it again...ended with even more black fingertips...lol

I'm ok with it though, its a small compromise for an excellent guitar. :)

    Thank you sir!

The real test will be tomorrow when I rehearse with my band. I'll see if this is as good as my other guitars with a full band. :)

I took the stain off with some steel wool and the fret board looks just fine. I think they were after an ebony look with the stain.
I had the stain coming off problem way back in March when I bought mine and told Gretsch customer service, they seemed unconcerned, nevertheless.
Awesome guitar and unmatched at that price point in my opinion.

I originally ordered mine to hold off my GAS for a Gibson LP. During the 6 month wait on my Gretsch I got the LP. I will just say that the G5220 has basically been the only guitar I have grabbed for the last month and a half.

Take an old white t-shirt and just rub off the stain. Took me 20 min on my G5230. The neck is lighter now a total non-issue. love the feel of the fretboard, the sustain, and the sound. Killer guitars, This one's mine. Congrats on your Beautiful guitar. Welcome to the Forum.

Looks good. Airline Silver? Did you use anything to help get the stain off?

    Thanks. The Gold looks great!!!
I only used the T shirt I wanted it to look more natural rather than scrubbed. So I didn't use any type of oil or cleaner. Just sat down watched a Star Wars movie and dry polished every single fret until the t'shirt had black leopard patterns on it lol. I may have exaggerated the 20 min polish time. It was prob longer. The guitar still looks Beautiful. I have had it since June. I play a lot more then my other guitars. My first original choice was your guitar, but I could not find it in stock anywhere. I really like the whole look including the V tail stop. I saw the airline silver and was smitten so I went with the 5230.
Let me know how the polishing goes.
