Finally got around to fitting some filtertrons on my 5420. Thanks to the classified section I sourced some gold ones and now they are fitted.
I did not need to unscrew the jack plug, only the pots. It took me about 3 hours without any special tools. Took it easy and took photos. I used the tv jones adaptor and kept my original rings, which I reversed to hide the twin adjustment holes.
Grateful thanks to @ZackyDog @Lockupyourfatdog @section2 and others who helped me in understanding how to go about the mod.
    regards
    Anthony

Apologies for crappy original post fro my phone. Now fixed it a little better. @rockinforJesus from a sonic perspective there is a noticeable difference to my ears. More separation and clarity is the most obvious for me. This is more the classic Gretsch sound I imagine when I think of this brand. The previous pickups were ok, just different, perhaps thicker sounding, and as I currently own only one Gretsch, this is preferable for me. I still need to tweak and balance the HS Filtertrons but I will take my time and any advice...

Awesome.. just did the mod but with TV Classics in my 5420t. Only difference I got the clips and adapter from TV. Nice work! I hear a big difference in the before and after.

Someone here also did a magnet mod on BT pickups changing to a thicker alnico magnet like the HS and TV have .I heard it really makes a difference.

Those pups have some good DNA! lol

Use this as a good guide to set pup height and pole adjustment.

Have some good pickin' with them.

Looks nice. I bought a G5420T several months ago and decided to put in a pair of TV Jones Classics. I'm mainly a Strat guy though and am used to working on Strats, but the G5420T seemed more complicated to work on, so I had a guitar tech do the pickup swap.

Nice work...looks like you got some with the already modded mounting brackets, which makes the job soooo much easier! I like the tone of Blacktops, but they don't have the same sparkle and chime that real Filtertrons give, which is the sound I play a Gretsch for!

I have maxed out the height adjustment on the bridge pickup and it still seems visually a little low compared to the recomended heights. I may put a spacer between pickup and the adaptor plate if needed. I may need longer screws however to do this.
However it sounds fine as it is for the moment. Anyone else have this issue?
    thanks

How much space is there between the pickup body and the E strings?
The HS pickups in my Falcon came to me with exactly 5/32” between the bridge pickup and the E’s and 7/32” for the neck pickup.
These are the measurements TVJ recommends as a staring point for for his Trons, and it looks and sounds like it’s perfect for HS’s as well.

IMG_20200410_122315.jpg IMG_20200410_121913.jpg In order to get to these measurements @calebaaron666 I just added some spacers between the bridge pup and adaptor plate. Now I can get closer to the strings and the sound is better.
Happy days... now just need a gold pickguard....

No, I got the pickups and then trimmed the neck one of the excess metal lip. Then I fitted the filtertron adaptor plate to the pickup using the screws that pass through the pickup.. I then fitted the TV Jones adaptor to one end of the adaptor plate. Then I attached this assembly to the original pickup rings using the 3 screws. but I turned the ring 180 degrees, so the twin holes are on the lower side, hidden by pickguard.
Easy part of the job. The fiddly part was the soldering and reassembly of the pots. I did not disassamble the input jack or tone pot as it was not necessary.
Here are some shots of both pups in phases of assembly.
