So sad. We were there just last August and my wife and daughter climbed all the way to the top. I am glad we got to see it.

That is so sad. We‘re sitting here, watching those horrible pictures on tv. More than 800 years old...

Yes. I saw it numerous times while going to Paris for work purposes but never took the time to enter it... Too late now.

Uh ... this is a tragedy...

I saw it in a TV in a shop ... came home, started my TV ... seems like this fire won't leave much behind.

This was a true masterpiece in architecture, engineering, culture ... something to be seen as holy even from an atheists point of view.

At least, until now, it seems no one has been killed (or I didn't hear about ... hopefully, no one will...).

I'm out of words. That's not often, but it is now.

Absolutely horrible. I become so sad when history is lost forever.

    Way down in the boondocks
That Cathedral represented European culture, and now it is gone.

Taken from an helicopter : yes, it's almost gone...

The firemens are pessimistic about stopping the spread of the fire which has reached the north tower :

    Paris, north down Montmartre hill
10:35 pm local time, still burning.

I went there several times, here are a few photos from the tower and roof visit:

Behind, St Jacques tower and Montmartre hill with Sacré Coeur:

Left: Montparnasse tower; right: golden dome of Les Invalides and Eiffel tower:

My son touching the 13 ton bell mentioned earlier by hcsterg:

The church on top of the hill is Sacré Coeur; the one at center before is St Eustache:

The dome on the left is Pantheon, close to La Sorbonne university:
(I was younger then, this was back in 2010. Now even sideburns are grey).

Another visit inside, shortly before Christmas 2014 with my mother-in-law:

The helicopters I'm talking about spray water through a hose (more or less), they don't just drop 1000 gallons on top. I can't see them being any worse than the fire hoses I keep seeing on the news.

Thanks for posting these pics Jeffrey Lee Pierre - at least for me, who have never entered nor climbed the monument...:oops::oops:

Another view taken by a firemens observation drone of the inside :

You will agree that obviously, there is nothing left ...

So tragic..I was lucky to have toured Notre Dame a couple of times and it's one of the most amazing places I've ever been.
Such a sad day for the world :(

The French National Radio (France Info) says at 23:00 (local time) that it seems that the fire in the north tower is mastered, and the two towers have chances to be saved...

A terribly sad historical tragedy. And during Holy Week no less! The only "positive", no loss of life.

Heartbreaking for sure. Our prayers are with our brothers and sisters in France today.
The world has lost a treasure but France has lost much more:(

Now we know that the two towers and the facades are the only remaing elements from Notre Dame de Paris to be potentially "saved", according to (our French president) Emmanuel Macron's TV declaration a few minutes ago.

That said, even if the fire seems to be under control now, the 400 firemen's fight and vigilancy is not at its end, loin s'en faut...

    Wait and See...
