For building instrument cables, what’s the best way to go regarding quality and durability? Is is still a big roll of Belden instrument cable and Switchcraft/Neutrik connectors? Something else?

Nothing wrong with Belden and Switchcraft.

I really like how my Canare(GS6 I think) cable rolls down at my feet... Stiffer cables are sometimes unpredictable in which direction they “fold”, turning moving-while-playing a hazardous if not comical exercise.

Edit. Sorry I mean Mogami. Not sure what is going on with my mind lately.

Mogami cable, Switchcraft jacks in my experience.
Check out manufacturer WORLDS BEST CABLES on Amazon. I had some and they are great quality.

Well, nothing else - except a good soldering iron to make neat solder joints, maybe some shrink tube...

    A+!

I've never been let down by Belden and Switchcraft.
For AC cables, it'd be Belden and Hubble.

One aspect to making your own---if they break, you know how to fix them.

I did, in fact, see their product on Amazon while checking prices last night, but was unsure about workmanship, so I appreciate the feedback on quality. Tempting to spare myself the work at that price. Looks like about $2.50 per foot with Mogami and Neutrik parts. I can source the same parts, choose custom lengths and add a tech flex jacket for about $2.25 per foot, I think.

I've lost count of how many Neutrik connectors I've replaced. Plastic parts don't last long with daily use.

I bought a few Mogami Gold guitar cables and absolutely hated them. They sounded really dull and low-fi compared to my Monster and (ancient) Whirlwind cables.

I don't have experience with Canare or Best-Tronics cable but they are highly rated choices to consider too.

Then there are the super low profile Square Plugs that are fairly new. https://www.redco.com/Squareplug-SP500-Low-Profile-Flat-TS.html
They also make a slightly smaller plug for pedalboard type connections.

Looks like a great price per foot for the Best-Tronics, too.
