So I haven't actually started on this one yet, other than to order some parts, like a Kahler bridge, Carvin nut, Pau Ferro fingerboard blank and hipshot ultralight tuners...

There's a guy out there that does five string conversions to stock Ric basses. He squishes the 5 string into the space the 4 would normally take up. I like the idea of a 5 string, but the USS John F. Kennedy platform sized necks turn me off.

So I'm going to build a bass based on the conversion. Close to stock Ric specs. Another neck-through.

This one is for me at the moment. I think sometimes that the conceptual stage of the builds is my favorite part.

I like building them but really like the "coming up with a plan" part. I let it roll around in my head, order parts, and see what comes together. I probably spend more time researching and coming up with a plan than actually building.
As always, looking forward to seeing this come together.

Is this something someone ordered or is it a bass that you will build for your personal enjoyment, David?

Wood is ordered, should be here next week.
I just redid the order for the first bass, so it will kinda look like this one wood wise, different shape and stuff of course.
Also ordered carbon fiber rods to go each side of the truss rod, skinny neck plus five bass strings must be a fair amount of tension, yeah?

I once converted a 4 string bass to a ....well 5 -1 string. I just replaced the low E with a low B, the A with E and so on. I mean it's a BASS -who uses the top string anyway?! :)

Not sure what you'd call it..."Drop B" bass maybe? It worked, anyway. Nice thin fretboard, Low B sound.

Gonna be a little while before I can start though.

Have to decide which pickups I want.

Got the inlays in and the board radiused. Time consuming.

    IMG_8352.JPG

Also got a shot with Naptha as the board will likely be lacquered.

    IMG_8353.JPG

And I love this Stewmac widget that lets you know if the slots are deep enough after the epoxy and sanding. Nothing worse than a fret that won't seat at one end for whatever reason and then chips the crap out of the board when you pull it out to fix it.

I am curious how this project will turn out. Right now I am not sure whether I like the shark-tooths, or not.
As an 80ies child: For a pointy Jackson I would say that those are obligatory but for any other classic style I have an aesthical problem.
