I’m talking important guitar techniques here, guitar faces

I am more like slash, I seemingly zone out, or as my college friend used to say, "Henry is in guitar land." Last couple performances I had to TRY to look up and smile, I am usually just absorbed in listening and playing.

I read an article -many years ago- where Steve Vai explained that making faces makes your guitarplaying more expressive.o_O

My playing doesn't warrant a cool guitar face. I winch when I miss a note or intonate wrong here and well...everywhere. My face does seem to take on a life on it's own once I have a Wah under my feet.

When I play my mouth just kinda hangs open...my wife says I look dazed! It takes all my facilities just to play the guitar :p

Not much guitar face here. About the most you'll ever see from me is a squint of the eye or wrinkle of the nose. My dad has a piano face. When he plays piano, for some reason he always sticks out it lower lip. I think it's a concentration thing.

I remember watching a Steve Vai video, and the faces he was making were basically obscene...I mean my cringes cringed, I mean my collection of cheeses ran out of my fridge and committed suicide, I mean I had to call my wife in and show her. She almost puked. I felt like I was watching someone take a dump that was way too pleasurable. It was embarrassing to the point of PTSD!

...phew, finally, after all these years, I got that off my chest...I feel better...

Lol. I love that he has a fan pointed at his face. The guy travels to guitar land at great speed and with no self consciousness! He did play for Zappa after all.

The blowing fan is the cherry on the cupcake for sure!
And so true! And you know what, God Bless him, he is an amazing talent, his music is not my cup of tea, but man how can one not appreciated his incredible talent..and, he seems very wise as well from the interviews I've watched with him! BUT those FACES! Wowza! But like you say to play at that level and that type of music I think you need to leave self consciousness far far behind...although Eric Johnson and Satriani are more restrained I think no?

Eric is a very restrained player. He does a few Hendrix moves here and there but it’s definitely a case of white guy dancing.
Satriani pulls a lot of faces, but nowhere near Vai level...he also plays so dang loud I had to leave the last time I saw him.

Hehe, yeah Eric has a bit of the stiff genious dork about him. And Damn...that must have been loud...You'd think Satriani would be more intelligent about the volume..but that's why I never go to a show anymore without my musician's earplugs
