I very much enjoy the neck shape on my 5230. It's turned into my go to guitar.
I stopped by GC yesterday and fondled a couple of Streamliners with thin U necks. Definitely not chunky enough for these aged mitts.
Looking at Double Jets and CVT’s now.
Did they ever make these with a wider headstock? Those narrow ones bug me a bit and neck dive doesn't bother me if it did I wouldn't have the Gretsch I have.
See if you can find a stump model, it really felt nice.
The originals had a bigger headstock, like a '62 or so.
It's one thing they didn't get right on the reissues.
I like that you were able to find out before buying one blindly online.
I’m sure burning the bandwidth doing my research!
I’ve found Double Jet specs indicating “U” neck shape (vs. “thin U” listed for the newer models) and “fat neck” was listed in one “Con” comment.
I also called Street Sounds and left a message. Rocky himself returned my call about 5 minutes later. He asked me to call back Wednesday morning when his luthier is in - said he’d have him measure necks for me. That’s service!!
The neck on my '08 Pro Jet is a pretty good handful so don't rule out a used model either. I think Rocky will take good care of you.
Well, consider me enabled!
Labor Day sale discounts tempted me beyond my ability to resist so I ordered this one from GC online:
Under 500 bucks!
NGD Monday! My second Gretsch is on the way.
Very nice! You done good
Agreed. I done real good!
My chunky neck requirement was fulfilled by this 2018 built 5245 - the neck profile is nearly identical to my 5420.
I added a Brick’s BiggsFix to improve the break angle and tuned up the nut slots. She’s nearly perfect now! I didn’t notice the stripped down control layout (master volume, master tone, selector switch) until after I ordered her but I’m enjoying the clean signal path! The Blacktops sound great on this incredibly resonant solid body, tone is punchy, and the attack is really lively. And she’s a beauty! I’ll post some photos in a belated NGD thread; when I’m not working on this dinky iPhone.
