Default I need help dating my Gretsch!!

Hello all. I'm new on here and I recently purchased a Gretsch guitar from guitar center. It's a smoke green Double Anniversary, but the serial tag on the inside has been worn and scratched out. It made me a little nervous buying it, but the entire guitar seemed to be at least 30 years old. The guys at Guitar Center (whom I don't trust entirely) said it's anywhere from a 59 to 72. Not sure where they came up with those years, but... On a side note, when i got home and opened up the beat up case it came with, i found the pick guard wrapped in paper towel... signed by what looks like Brian Setzer. Again, can't say for sure if it's real. But a cool story!

My Anni is from 1962, I'm no expert but that looks like a pre Baldwin era label, so it's older than '68.
Someone should be able to give you better help soon.

Haha... I was going to respond with something along these lines...

Don't forget to ask her lots of questions about her. Try not to talk about yourself. Make her feel important.

Check for a serial number on the end of the headstock.

While I'm afraid I can't offer any help, as soon as Wayne Gretschzky sees this thread, he'll likely have some very good info. He's one of the real Gretsch aficionados and experts.

Looks like someone sold Guitar Center a stolen guitar. The last few times I've seen serial number tags treated that way it was to keep stolen property from being traced. Neat pickguard though; it looks like it might actually be Brian Setzer's signature (can't tell for sure without a better closeup, but it looks like a fluid signature, don't see any obvious start/stops).

Yeah. That is likely stolen. I can see no reason why someone would go over the label like that with what looks like a black magic marker.

Beautiful guitar, but might be tough to date (She's just so choosey!)

Yeah I thought it might have been stolen at some point in its life. It's not marker, its actually rubbed through an you can see the wood. Anyways, I just didn't want to be getting tricked into buying some sort of imposter. I'm gonna try to see if there is any numbering or dating on the under side of the pups. While it'd be nice to know the exact year, I don't mind too much cause it plays and sounds very nice! And Brian Setzer!

The Hilotron pickups make it late 1960 or later... the G-indent control knobs make it 1967 or earlier. So there's your range '60-'67. The pot codes might narrow it a bit further.

Bobb... if a Gretsch guitar has a paper label, it will not have a stamped serial number. It's either one or the other.

Don't take it personally if you're turned down. Some Gretsches don't want to be dated because they are concentrating on their studies and preparing for college. Try to make friends first.
