Good finish for back of neck?
So I'm part way through sanding the plastic(poly) off the back of my Pro Jet neck and hope to finish this weekend. I'll need to put something back on it but being a neck I think you have to be careful what you use.....
Any wisdom?

Tung oil, or gun stock oil. Gun stock wax protection coat after that. Thats how I finish necks.

I'm a big fan of Danish oil for necks. I just love the feel of it. Truoil gun stock oil feels great too, but is a bit harder to get hold of in the UK (we just have fewer gun stocks that need oiling, I guess).

I have used Tung Oil with good results. I rub it out with Meguiars Scratch X2.0 to get it silky smooth and then apply a dab of Meguirs polish.

Sticky Neck Syndrome
So let's say a good tech did some work on a neck binding and finished his work with what I believe to be laquer or nitro clear coat like from the factory. It is very sticky however, which I hate. I rubbed it with .0000 steel wool down to a satin whch I heard might cure the stickyness. Still pretty sticky, what can I do to ge rid of he sticky feel besides removing paint, sure don't want to do that. Thank goodness this is not my Gretsch, it's actually a gibson SG custom in olympic white. Anyone recommend a cure ?

I have a specialty wood shop in the area and picked up Waterlox Tung oil which looks to be about right. I have heat gun and sanded the entire back of the guitar from headstock to the strap pin hole!
2 coats of walnut stain are drying and I'll Tung oil it tomorrow. Impressed on the mahogany used. 2 pieces for the body, 1 for the neck. I am aging it a bit allowing the stain to color the binding. There are some dark spots in the wood, probably should have used wood conditioner but I kind of like the contrast anyway.
I think I'll wet sand the face(black) to dull it a bit as well.......
My wife thinks I'm nuts.....she's probably right!

I use Water Lox too, I prefer it over the Minwax Tung oil. I think it gives a nicer amber color to the wood, otherwise works the same it seems. Wheres the pics man!

If I do one again I will order waterlox nothing but good said about them on reviews and demos. They are a little higher priced than the other brands probably with good reason. Unfortunately they have a limited distribution system so you won't find them at homedepot or Lowes.

Ya lucky me, it's 5 min from my house in Burlington, the place smells awesome with woods from all over the world. They have a lutherie section as well.
