Default Surf Music on a Gretsch?

In response to this question, asked a few weeks ago, here is the answer. Played on a 5129 Red Falcon and a Pro Jet with NYII pickups, here's an old Venture's tune:

My new Gretsch arrived last night and boy does it Surf. With the OEM strings Tele players were complaining that it was too bright.

Synchro brings up something I've been wondering about.....

Many people feel that the G5120s are "twangy". Some people think too twangy. Even the Gretsch advertising starts out "get ready for some serious twanging". If we wanted to tone it down a little, has anyone tried using 1/2 round strings? I am assuming flat wounds would kill too much of the twang.

Very nice Tony! Interesting timing posting this - I'll be playing Pipeline this weekend, and decided to leave my Anni behind in favour of my Fender Cyclone. Mostly because I don't have time to clean/restring/properly set it up before then. Plus I'm plugging into someone else's amp, don't even know what it is yet, so I'm afraid of unexpected Hilotron complications volumewise...but now you've got me doubting myself.

A Hilo-Tron guitar is OK for Surf but it wouldn't be my first choice. Hilos are mellow and somewhat jangly but not all that powerful.

Good, I didn't think it worked well but it does have old strings so I wasn't 100%. The Cyclone's TexMex is killer for it.
Thanks for the expert opinion

Tex-Mex pickups are great. It's probably my favorite Strat pickup. I bought a Tex-Mex Strat 17 years ago . . . it was my first choice. I actually chose it OVER an American made Strat.

HiLoTrons, IMHO, are mellow pickups. With the right amp they are amazingly good but for a day-to-day axe I prefer a bit more oomph.

Hey Tony, cool Job. I say it's better than the original.
I like your Apache and J'taime version too.

Thanks to all, I love that old stuff.

Admittedly , my experience with HiLo's is limited but I love the sound of them and wouldn't hesitate to play surf (or anything for that matter) with them. I love the bright, articulate sound you get from single coils but in truth, I find Filter'trons pretty darn good too. The DeArmond 2000's in my Red Falcon take to Surf like a duck to water. The nice thing is, you can play surf with a HiLo and it will sound great, but not like anyone else. If you're trying to sound like Dick Dale... maybe not

Tony:

I played your track for my Dad (an old long boarder out of Southern California) and he said it took him back to the parties they used to have at San Onofre - great playing

Thanks Teacher, let it never be said that a Gretsch can't surf!

Really Awesome! I like your version better than the original.

Surf tunes on my 5120 sound great. No prob coping a surfy tone or vibe.
The downside to me is not as good upper fret access.
Some of those tunes require going way up there. Penetration, for example, is damn hard to get to the high part. Same with a lot of Hank Marvin stuff. Some kinda Fender is easier, but I really dont get along with Strat trems. My wife would kill me if I went and got a Jet or something.
Thats why I did this:
