Lindy Fralin P90
Been considering getting another G5120, to set up like an Eddie Cochran model. Which P90 should I get?

Seriously, I still like Gibsons, but decent P90 pickups seem less complicated to reproduce. Even the cheapies from Epiphone, Wilkinson, Artec can sound decent. That said I enjoy my Lollars too.

Came across this awhile back P90 Comparison with sound clips.
Has sound clips of 22 different P90s (GFS is not included). These are mostly the high end mass produced (Gibson, Seymour Duncan, Dimarzio) and boutiques. From this, imho, the Toneriders stood up with most of the best sounding, at a substantially lower price. But, YMMV. Great to compare tone on the different P90s. Clips are at the bottom (article is in German, but pup manufacturers names on clips are English. Toneriders are the last clip

Do you guys know if you can just put a dogear P90 over the hole of the grestch bucker pickup on the 5120? Or will there be a gap?

Great site for comparisons, thanks for posting it. But there seemed to be a problem with the words on the screen, they were all spelled wrong.

I´d put in a P90 spacer underneath the P90, plus you need to drill two new holes for the dogear version

Interesting test, and I hate to be a criticaster here, but besides the novelty of comparing a slew of pickups side by side, virtually meaningless. It just tells you how a particular pickup will react to a particular guitar. And that's assuming they've used the same guitar...otherwise what would be the point of doing a side by side?

I don't know how they would sound in your Gretsch, but I was very impressed by the Fralins. They sounded real close to the ones in my '52 Les Paul. Fat on the bottom and crisp on top, but never muddy or shrill.

Feel free to test all the pups on every possiber guitar then, by all means. It atleast gives a starting point as far as basic tone for the various pickups.

Don't take it personally cyber, it's a good link.
Guess I've just read too many hypey PU-reviews leaving someone to think they need to spend 300+ bucks to get decent pickups for their guitar, when depending on the player's taste and demands, a cheaper set could possibly do just as well.
There's just too many variables in good guitar tone, to make absolute PU recommendations for any given guitar.
Point in case, There are some people over here that actually prefer Pre-FMIC filtertrons over TV Jones. And yet, noone is denying that technically the TV is a better made pickup... I have a wonderfull Gibson T-top sounding bloody amazing in a mahogany LP, but turning to certified crap in a alder strat. And the solution was not picking a "better" pickup in some PAF shootout.

It's why I liked the Toneriders on that list. IMHO they sounded as good as most of the much more expensive pups on that list.
