What Overdrives Do You Use With Your Gretsch?
Hey everyone,
I'm in the market for a low to mid gain overdrive, something that enhances my sound instead of morphing it into something it not... Nothing two expensive, and preferably something readily available (not a special order jobby) What do you choose to use and why?
Some of the Pedals that came to mind... Opinions appreciated;
Tube Screamer (Not sure which one, need to do some research)
Lovepedal Amp 11
Joyo Sweet Baby
Timmy? (Maybe. The wait would be an inconvenience but if its worth it over the other choices)
Thanks guys

Whacking the string with the pick extra hard, and if that's not enough... I jump up and down too.

As much as i like the sound of a tube amp cranked up, i don't always get the chance to do that, due to volume complaints , sod when i need a little bite, its the brain, and when i need some actual breakup, the tim.

So far, these are doing the job for me...
I'm not listing my Dyno Brain as I don't really see that as an OD pedal. Yes, it can fill that role, but I see as it more of amp enhancement than a guitar pedal. You know what I mean? Heck, I'll throw in a pic of mine, just for poo and giggles (can I say that on TV?).

I like a MXR micro amp for a moderate boost that preserves the original tone.

Wow! Loads of pedals to go and look at!
And to those of you who said Tavos Brain Pedals.... I already have an atomic! Sorry, in hindsight I should have included that in my first post. Oops!

I've tried lots of Wampler pedals, just didn't get on with any of them. I've had lots of expensive and 'boutique' pedals, but I'm actually quite impressed with the range of cheap Joyo pedals.
Im generally not that keen on TubeScreamers, they work best with single coils, they can be a touch muddy with Filtertrons Though, the best Tube Screamer clone I've had (i've had lots) is the Joyo Vintage Overdrive. Great pedal.
I really love my Joyo Sweet Baby. It does compress, a bit on the bass, and a touch on the treble, but mids are good. My Fender amp is hyper sensitive to pick attack, and my hot HiLotrons are too. Together, they're a handful, but the Joyo reigns the guitar in just enough, to allow me to produce some astonishing tones. I set it to light breakup. Play lightly, it's clean, whack the strings, nice growl.
I also like the Joyo Ultimate Drive. It's a higher gain pedal (based on the OCD), great for punk and rock. It's a very competent, and good with humbuckers I can't knock it. It can also be used for light gain, but the Sweet Baby is more tweaksble at lower gain settings.
Another good all rounder is the Boss SD-1. I have one with the asymmetric clipping mod (switchable, you can turn the mod on and off). Again, distantly related to the Tube screamer. I think you would like this one, I also believe Mr Setzer likes these too.
In a very different flavour, K.Y.LL Drive by Doombastard FX. It's a clone of a Univox Unidrive, very similar to a Creepy Fingers Doomidrive. It's a fat sounding overdrive, with a good gritty boost. If you crank it, it has monstrous bass. On max drive, it gets quite fuzzy; it's an interesting pedal, very different to anything else I own. You can get a very Jimmy Page type of tone out if it. It's a lot of fun.
Dan, I'm off travelling again soon, so happy to post a few of these off to you to audition for a few weeks. Let me know which ones you want, i will send them on.
All the best
Paul

I thought you would have experience in overdrives, thank you for all the information you have offered up! I think the two that stand out as possibilities for me personally are the Joyo Sweet Baby and possibly the SD-1.
How is the build quality on the Sweet Baby? Seeing as its a low priced clone I'm just curios as to how the price affects build quality and components...
I'll have to go and try the SD-1, it gets mixed reviews and I'm one of those people who tends to not go for BOSS stuff, maybe this time though!
Thanks Again,
Dan

I hope that is my story when my Atomic Brain gets here ordered from Tavo last week. I'm using a Gearmandude Luther Drive for OD now and liking it TS808 with some tweaks. Marlin says he really digs the Joyo Sweet Baby I may have to try one $50.00 shipped from China looks good compared to the Sweet honey drive.

Joyo's are well built - in a nice solid metal enclosure. Nothing wrong with them, I've always been surprised by how much you get for your money! They're a good modding platform too!
I've heard of some being DOA, and others with non functioning LED's, but all the Joyo pedals I've tried have been great out of the box.
Here is a good video of the Sweet Baby, and the pedal it's based on:
PM me your address again (had to clear out older PM's), and I'll try to get them out to you today.
All the best
Paul

The Rockbox is worth every one of the many many many pennies you need to buy one.
There is a Rockbox clone on eBay. Was tempted.....
