Anybody use a Second Low Watt Amp for your Overdrive Pedal
Thought I would start this thread after seeing another thread on giving up on overdrive pedals. This has has worked very nicely for me you can run a decent live volume and get that wonderful "real overdrive tone". There is nothing more beautiful than an overdriven Twin Reverb on 10 or my Pro Reverb on 8 of course it is ear splitting and way to loud unless you are The Los Lonely Boys and are probably deaf anyway.
My favorite overdrive pedal/amp is a Gries Minnow 1x12 Eminence Lil Texas with a DeLisle amp switcher see Mugsy on the forum together with 66 Fender Pro-Reverb 2X12 Eminence Governors. Nothing like a real tube overdriven amp in the mix at live volumes you can stand.

I once setup a Pro Junior and a Blues Jr together and would kick on the Pro Jr when I took a solo. It added an overdriven sound but the clean Blues Jr sound stayed as well. It was fairly effective.

Hmmm - aside from the cost difference between a minnow and a good overdrive pedal, the tone is probably better than most pedals. You can also buy pedals that use tubes for the overdrive.
But this is why amps with separately controllable preamp sections came into being I guess.

Raye, isn't that a master/slave setup as used by many pros? Running one amp's (pre-)amp line out/FX loop out into another amp? How have you wired yours?

I often use 2 amps with an amp switcher to do this with the added benefit of having a back up amp if one fails. If both fail I pack up, go home and go to bed.
For small gigs I have 2 x Laney LC15 combos, medium gigs a FDeluxe Reverb and FDeluxe VM (allows different Echo / Reveb Setting for lead) and stupid loud gigs 2 x Laney VC50's.
Works for me but I still have the boss overdrive for when its a one amp gig.
The Laney VC50 is stil the only amp I've ever seen which gives you fully adjustable clean and an overdriven Rythm volume level channels PLUS 2 x Clean or Dirty Lead Volume Channels with EVERYTHING controlled by the rear Vol Pot which acts as an overall Master Vol when the FX Loop switch is in the middle Insert position.
I just can't be arsed to carry it around as it weighs 16 tons.

I've messed with that setup using my Swart AST MKII Head(22 watts) w/ 1x12 cab and my Swart ATOM(5 watt...1x8 combo) and kicking in the ATOM with an ABY switch...works great...it's also cool to leave them both on and ride the guitar volume control...I sometimes throw a treble booster on the ATOM channel to get it cooking even more...pretty huge sounding rig that's fairly easy to cart around...

About 20 years ago I used a '65 Ampeg Reverberocket into a line leveler into an early 70s Ampeg V-4. Best that V-4 ever sounded. Of course, it still weighed a ton and I soon swapped that setup for a Fender Showman which I've been using ever since.

I used to run from the line out of a Mesa Boogie MkII C+ into a blonde Bassman. Talk about a heavy pedal! Sounded glorious though

Remeber the smooth fuzz tone in "No Time" by The Guess Who?
Garnet Herzog. Basically a small tube amp with a line-level output.

I have played clean through a Roland JC120 and dirty through a Marshall JTM30 at the same time. I loved it, but it was just too much gear to lug around, took more time to set up and was just one more thing that could go wrong. On stage, all I want to be concerned about is how to play the songs. That's difficult enough for me.
I'm a simple soul.

I think the Fender Greta is designed for this. Its either a 2 watt amp with a 2 inch speaker, or you can use it as a natural tube preamp. 269 for a pedal/amp. In the past, i ran my evil twin on one channel of a A/B switcher, on clean, and a Line 6 XL100 through the other, broken up. It was a wall of sound, but i had to get the hummix to stop the 60 cycle hum i got from running two amps. When turned up, which is the only volume the evil twin has, it was very full, but the band did not care for the wall of sound, so now its the bassman, and i am looking to even dwon size from that.

I've got one of those little Brian May designed Vox amps that is supposed to be like his own hand made 'effects' amp. It comes with instructions on how to get his signature sounds by feeding the guitar signal through the little Vox into your stage amp.
It was so much fiddling around that I wrapped it up, put it in the wardrobe and promised myself that one day when I had time I'd have another look at it.
So far, I've......
