ANAL-og vs. DIGIT-al
So.. I was at the NAMM show and got a demo
of the new Electroharmonix Deluxe Memory Boy
analog delay with tap tempo, effects loops, and triplets.
That is a TOooo own for me.. but then I went over and
saw the new TECH21 Delay w/ tap temp and modulation
..crap its awesome too.
Plus Tech21's pedal while digital was built by a guy that
knows, owns and uses a space echo. An engineer that is
a guitarist and vintage tape echo fiend...cool
I went home and freaked out in indecision and bought myself
2 more 1884 Boss analog DM-3 pedals..
I love delaaaaaaaaaaayyy

I'm playing around with the Memory Boy quite a bit. W-I-D-E range of sounds, mild to wild. A bit flakey too, but thats part of its charm.

Holy smokes TV, are you gettin' some weather, or what? I heard they had 90+ mph winds and 8 tornados in Orange county. Have family there, and my Mom's in San Diego.
I would like another delay...only have a Carbon Copy at the moment, but I don't wanna end up with as many as you!!
I'm an ol' rocker (Beatles-Zeppelin) getting into some rockabilly...can you recommend something? Don't wanna spend the coin for the real deal but wouldn't mind spending 2-3 bills.

Tavo,
is the Tech 21 a newer version of the BOOST DLA with TT? I love that pedal.
It's good to know that when I start putting a board together, between you and the rest of the gang here, I'll have in depth experienced reviews of every box on the planet.

These are the toughest kinds of choices. I like my 1-5 (digital with analog sounding "warmth" knob) but I want analogman's new dual delay. It's got expression pedal and tap tempo capability. Check out gearmandude's 20 minutes of video on it. here's a pic:

TC's Nova Delay?

We havent floated away yet. I'm inland a bit by 35miles, so we only have had "mild hail and 60mph winds". Its so cool.. our pool is full of dirt and debri, our roof is now leaking or should I say our ceiling is now leaking. I guess the flashing around the chimney has given up the ghost after 55 yrs.
If you like the sounds of of Zep and you are movin towards roots.. you cant
go wrong with the new Deluxe memory boy for $180.. yet if digital doesnt make you grimace with the constipated facial contortions of most booteek guitarists you might enjoy the line6 DL4. It is a very very intuitive, versitile
delay pedal. full of gadgetry yes but how can you mess up a knob that points to 2 versions of the famous Maestro Echoplex (EP-1 tube and EP-2 solid state) as well as the Deluxe memory man and Dm-2 analog sims.
True bypass and tap tempo.. plus a 30 second phrase trainer you can actually
jam with when working out solos. Simple.
Even more simple and much more organic though is this new Tech21 Delay with modulation, tap tempo, triplets,etc..
If you want the program headaches and learning curve joys of other really nice digi devices the Nova delay is a sweetheart, or even better the Eventide.
I had both the Empress Vintage Modified Superdelay (a programable digi box) and the Wampler faux tape echo for a few weeks but let em go.
When I paired the Empress up with my DL4, it wasnt worth the learning curve and weird controls.. The Wampler was the most incredible sounding
Deluxe Memory man type pedal Ive ever played but its slap backs crap out when hit with a boost, Eq, or preamp due to the "faux" analog chip it shares with most of its kind out there, the "PT2399" digi lo res chip..
so it had to go as well.
The 84' DM-3 boss pedal is very limited to rockabilly meets late 60s rock but damn if it isnt the cream of the shorty echo pedals. i've found out the reason this thing works so well with drive and boost boxes is that it has a higher impedance input than its predecessor; the DM-2.. and it employs a unique compander circuit that keeps the delay side of the circuit from clipping and echoing smoothly. this is not unique to just the Boss analog delay but the manner in which it reacts with other boxes in front of it IS indeed. The end result yields an initial slap back/repeat that is very warm and dynamic while letting the following repeats smear like a saturated tape delay. Minus the "wow n flutter" effect of course as its just a little echo box but nothing has got my attention more than this thing.
..there are a zillion delays out there and they are all fun. some one trick ponies and others swiss army knives.. but its the ones in between that have so much character.

Just talked to my dad in Huntington Beach, it's been raining cats and dogs and an water-spout crept up the beach to flip some SUV's. Hope my friends there and in LB are safe.
Tavo,
Thanks for the report. I always enjoy your reviews.
They always throw a monkeywrench into my plans, and make me reevaluate my choices. Might wind up with 8 delays on my board.

TV, I sure hope you and yours fair well.
Thank's a bunch for the tips. I'd not heard of the new deluxe EHX Boy. Big outlets I just checked don't even have 'em yet. Did find them and at couple places, though.
Have had my eye on that Line 6 for over a year now, and the complexity of the Nova had concerned me, although it was the first delay a guru suggested to me quite a while back.
Really like the way this Tech 21 reads...this the one you were referring to?

We're good.. its So Cal.. the media makes everything "terror" status all the time.
so when you gonna grab one of those Tech 21 DLA TT boxes.. musicians friend has em ready to go with a 45 trial period. I am giving in since I cant get my hands on the Dlx Memory boy and I have a wholesale accnt with newsensor!! They were suppose to be ready last week..
Plus the TECH21 has the "trails" mode that is amazing when you set the delay time long. You stomp off the last chord you played and it "trails" off while you play a lead lick over that trail, then you stomp it back on-play
another chord, stomp it off and play another lick over that trail that is now laying over your last trail and lead lick.. campy fun when you get bored
of having accurate and modulated rockabilly tape echo nailed down.
I wonder where Ruger9 is..he was tellin me all along to pay attention to this
box. He should have one by now!

It certainly is...love it down there, too. Spent almost 4 of the last 6 weeks over 2 different trips in San Marcos....already jonesing for fish tacos, fried oyster poorboy, a scallop sammich and La Jolla Coves. Sonoma (?I think?) beach is a beautiful walk, too...where everyones' runnin' their dogs...that looks like a real kick for them pooches, every darn one of 'em was grinnin
These folks say they're accepting pre-orders on the deluxe music boy and state their ETA is Monday.
http://www.worldmusicsupply.com/Elec...emory-Boy.html
Putting together a little order now...but doesn't Mf have a 45 day trial period on pretty much everything? I might run into Spokane this weekend (100 mile trip, one way) and look at some Lesters and check out the delays...doesn't look like I'll be able to check out the music boy, though.
The 21 sounds really great and I might just grab it or order when I get back...we'll see.

I'm still diggin' the Empress, but I agree what I use it for could be accomplished with a cheaper, simpler pedal. (I DO love having presets tho!) problem is, NOTHING I have found does authentic-sounding slap/ambient tape like the Empress does. The Tech21 is the only other delay I'm interested in, but have run out of funds for anything else!

Analog all the way. All that tap tempo and other space age stuff confuses me. I use an MXR Carbon Copy set to almost a slapback for when I need delay.

No, scantily clad young girls make my drummer happy. I don't think he'd care about tap tempo.
