Cheap plank
I am thinking that I might buy a guitar to keep at the office to noodle around on at lunch. It needs to be very quiet, since I have office neighbors close by. It needs to be cheap - really, really cheap - because I am broke.
What comes immediately to my mind is a Squier Strat. An unplugged solid body will be pretty much silent from outside the room, I'd think. And Squier Strats are a dime a dozen. Some of the Squiers sound good and some of them suck, but in this case, it pretty much won't matter. It'll never be plugged in, anyway.
Any other ideas?

If your broke air guitar is always an option.

I thought of that, but it's tough to learn forming barre chords on an air guitar. Besides, I already have quite a selection of those!

The Rondo SX Series tele and strat copies are getting a lot of love at the moment, and they're pocket money cheap: http://www.rondomusic.com/electricguitar.html
Also, Italia guitars seem to go cheap on the second hand market (in the UK). They're great guitars. I got a yellow italia Maranello Speedster 1 with the Bruce Lee/Kill Bill stripes for £100 used. A bargain, it's a fab guitar. http://www.musicradar.com/tuition/gu...-300-213316/12
That' probably what I would get, or buy a used beat up Squire for peanuts.

Squire Tele. Or Xaviere knockoff. In my mind office=sitting position, and I always felt Strats were lousy sitting down as the round edges make it want to slide away. A Tele stays in place.

Zowie. Those Rondos are indeed super cheap, even new. Thanks for the links.

On craigslist weird may be available. Cheap is always available, if you aren't picky.

Another vote for Rondo. I've played a couple of Agile Les Pauls & and a SX bass. Great for the money. Plus people seem to get most of their purchase price back when they sell them.
Or look for a used Tele or Strat with a little cosmetic damage (dings, chipped paint, stickers, etc). Dinged guitars can be a great deal as long as the neck & electronics are in good shape.
