New Gretsch player here
Hello all,
Found your forum while Google searching for information on the G5120. I have a new orange one due for delivery on Wednesday.
I have owned one Bigsby equipped guitar in the past and it went out of tune every time I worked the tremolo. But I couldn't resist the G5120 and had to order one. I have been reading about different bridges and keeping the nut lubed to remedy the problem. Hopefully it won't be too bad, and if it is the corrections appear affordable.
I've read here that some folks buy 1" Bigsby springs. What is the advantage of that and how tall is the stock spring?
I've been playing guitar on and off for about 20 years. Looking forward to joining the world of Gretsch players.
Regards,
Jake

Welcome Jake glad to have you here! Between lubeing the nut and widening the slot a little will take care of all your problems. Most of us play with 10's to 12's for strings. If you want a little more bluesey sound or Jazz sound go to the flat wounds. I don't remember what was on my bigsby, I went to the shorter one. Don't forget to post pictures of you gear. We love guitar Porn!!

Thank you! I have been doing my own setups for quite a while and have nut files if needed. I use 10's on all of my guitars; don't know what will be on the G5120 from the factory.
I play blues, classic rock and just about anything that is fun to play and listen too.

cool, I think you 5120 will come with 10's on her. I think you might want to upgrade to 11's . That's just me, I play with 12's.

Howdy Jake, good to have you here. Curious about the 1" spring, myself.
Love Colorado. Have spent many summer vacationsm, mostly near Rocky Mtn. Natl Park. Bit in the Ouray area too. Phenominal.

Welcome aboard the great ship G-T Jake! you'll love it here!
I'll third the request for info on the 1" spring, I've seen it mentioned a few times but can't imagine any benefit beyond the ability to go "further" (soundwise) in a dive.

The main advantage of the 1" Bigsby spring (as opposed to the 3/4" or 7/8" standard) is to put the arm at a height more comfortable for the player (depending on player preference). Basically the same thing as putting a shim (or penny) in the Bigsby. And yes, I've got the 1" spring. Well, let me rephrase that: after playing a buddy's Gretsch with a 1" spring I decided to order one. Received it... and then promptly lost it. Can't for the life of me figure out what the heck I did with the danged thing, and just haven't had a chance to order another one. Doh.

Welcome Jake. I'll concur with fjr's comments...except losing the spring of course...

Welcome to the board Jake. I think the one inch spring is an improvement. Stock you get 7/8", I believe. Anyway, better placement (if you like higher) and a little more tension as well as a deeper dive. I think the placement and tension made the difference to me. A worthwhile mod for $4. Only cheaper mod might be 3/4" rubber grommets to prevent that annoying "harping." Search the threads you'll see pictures and discussion. Thanks Bear / Tartanphantom. Plenty of info here to keep you busy while you wait on your shiny, new 5120 Jake. Enjoy!

Hi Jake. I string with 9-46. Doesn't pose a tuning stability problem for me as long as I don't go all Hendrix on it. True for my Duo-Jet & my Bigsby equipped Tele.
