Hi from New Orleans
Hi, everyone. Looking forward to being a member of this very nice forum.
I've been in love with Gretsch guitars since I was a teenager in the 60s. They were always soooo cool looking and sounding.
Well, I just lucked upon what I think is a '66 Tennessean that a guy bought about 30 years ago from his guitar teacher. Unfortunately for him, but great for me, he couldn't play very well, so he gave up soon after buying it, and under the bed it went . . . until just recently.
I found the owner's ad on my local Craigslist and he was about an hour's drive away. I checked recent sales of similar guitars and the asking price was about half, so I immediately hopped in my car and rushed over to check it out.
The guitar was dusty, some of the strings were broken, the bridge was way out of place, and some of the binding on the neck was missing. But it looked to be in really great shape.
The good news is the neck is straight as an arrow and a little on the beefier side, which I love. The finish is in great shape and so are the electronics. No scratchiness in the pots or switches. It came with original case and it's pretty light at 6 lbs. 8 oz.
Best of all -- it sounds amazing!!!
One small problem is that 2 of the pickups' pole piece screws were stuck as the result of being unused for so many years, and part of the top of the screws broke off.
After a little struggle, I was able to get the stuck screws loose, but now I'd like to find 2 replacement screws if anyone has some extras for sale or if you know of a good source. I did some Google searches but couldn't find any.
Looking forward to spending much more time here!

Hey Brusby,
I'd write to tvjones.com about those
Its much more important to the pickups getting a better output by raising the
entire pickup body closer to the the strings, as opposed to raising pole height (even in 1 bobbin filters like HTs). Raising the pole screws is more for
string balance between strings. You will want to put some compression rubber shims under the pickups and get the top of the pickup cover up to 3/16" between it and the bottom of each E string.
Not the same exact application here but it gives you an idea of what is ideal.

Sure do, and also the Basement Wall, Greek Fountains, Palace Guard, John Fred and the Playboys. Were you in Potliquor?
Funny, I just started getting together to play music with some friends who were in late 60s early 70s groups Threshold, Blackmore and Kolour.
Here's an interview with one of them you might get a kick out of: http://www.60sgaragebands.com/thresholdofsound.html
Always nice to hear from another local coona__!

nope, my cousin Les Wallace played lead guitar for the original POTLIQUOR. I've noticed that there was a later version of the group.
here's a couple of links for your listening pleasure.
oh, I almost forgot to add that I met John Fred back in '71 in Augusta, Georgia. I was stationed at nearby Fort Gordon.
