Default MXR Dyna Comp (WARNING: STEEL GUITAR CONTENT)

A last-minute recording session landed in my lap. A soundtrack producer friend decided he might like some steel guitar. I play a bit of lap steel, enough to get by. His idea was vague: "chords with lots of sustain." I knew I'd better throw some flat-wounds on my cheap lap steel, and purchase some sort of compressor. I went with the readily-available MXR Dyna Comp for a few reasons; Two knobs; built like a battleship anchor; 1/3 the price of the Keeley. My first test run yielded this result https://www.dropbox.com/sh/9f8i34iyq...ick%20copy.wav
Infinite sustain, way noisy. I've since learned the obvious: if you use a compressor to lift up a dying signal, you will, necessarily, be magnifying the unwanted sounds as well. Now that I own this thing, I plugged my normal guitar into it. Output at 2 o'clock, sensitivity at 10 o'clock. It gets a REALLY good sound with lots of sustain, but it changes the sound of my guitar so much I'm a little bit uneasy. If I install it on my small pedalboard, it would be for use when I'm playing slide, as well as on Motown/funk tunes, in order to even the volume of repetitive "chanks"
