Well...
I'm not really one for jumping onto what is popular just because it's popular and I don't recommend anyone else do that either. We have to learn from our own mistakes...
So in that light, and being a strat enthusiest who is used to perfect intonation (or as close as you can get) I opted for a TOM Roller bridge to replace a 1 piece alluminum bridge that came with my cheaper Gretsch (5125) The idea being that you can individually adjust the saddles for that - close to perfect set-up. I even built a new hardwood base for it to sit on and maticulously shaped it to a percision fit and custom fit the posts so that they were rock solid. It is a thing of beauty...
Unfortunately it sounds like crap!
The intonation is definately a little better than the 1 piece bridge but the loss is really not worth the gain. A hollowbody is just simply a different kind of beast. I don't regret trying what I did, and I do build well so it's not a matter of me not being able to deliver. I matched up the radius properly and fit it very well to the body. The single piece bridge just rings out so much better.
So I'll be ordering a Compton just as soon as I let my wife know that I screwed up!
