I'm sorry for asking the bleedin' obvious but can anybody confirm what 'gas' means? Is it 'Gretsch Addiction Syndrome' or some such?

Eat a big bowl of ranch style beans...
Wait an hour....
Then you'll know what 'gas' is...

OK all joking aside...
What is gas?
Well we know what everyone calls it, but let's look deeper.
Looking deeper unviels the psychie of the person who has 'gas'
Some have 'gas' to make up for lack of skill.
Some have 'gas' because they like wall art..
Some have 'gas' because in this modern society hardly anyone is satisfied with what they already have. It is a very materialistic age. More is allways better, we are feed this through television, radio and the web.

Can also be Gear Acquisition Syndrome when talking about pedals, amps, mics, etc. It's a powerful affliction that affects millions. One relief is TUMS (Totally Unnecessary Musical Stuff or Totally Useful Musical Stuff or Time to Unload My Stuff... depending on who is doing the diagnosing) but never seems to be a long-lasting cure.

Retirement and the subsequent income loss do not cure the disease, but it sure treats the symptoms!

Two years of chemo, three amputations, and thirty five religious conversions. The closest I ever came to self-control was when I was paying child support (always on time for the record). I was managing OK until some enablers showed up. It's just a little travel guitar...

I don't protest..
I state how I see things..
Not all things are cute and cuddly Care Bears..
Sometimes.. you have to look deep to find answers.. depending on the individual looking inward.. can be ugly... or it can be wonderful.. but it will always show the true nature of the individual..

Or perhaps it's just simply that we live in a time when it's actually possible to own more than one guitar and amp, or that some people like the aesthetics and different tones of well constructed musical instruments. Or, heck, a whole myriad of positive reasons.
Because, oddly, other collectors of other 'things', generally don't have any of those three 'underlying pyschological reasons'. Heck, the only one of the three that applies to many, older, top players with truly MASSIVE collections, is the third. And, even that doesn't really apply to them, as their formative years predate the medai blitz you allude to..
But, by all means, keep looking for the darkest reasons in the world. As long as it keeps you happy, or miserable, or whatever your looking for
