Hey King,

I think all Gretschs are versatile, and the 6119 is no exception. I love my '03. I don't stretch the limits of genres, but with those HS Filtertrons, you can make many styles sound good.

Play one in a store if possible.

I just bought a 2003 as well. No lack of Gretch-ness here. It's a wonderful instrument. Keep in mind, if you care about such things, the scale length isn't the 24.6" as in the 6120 series. It's the 25.5" like a Stratocaster.

My only complaint was the rattle-prone bridge. Once I set up the intonation the way I liked it, I put drops of super glue at each screw to stabilize it. But ultimately, I bought a Compton bridge.

I have a '92 pre FMIC terada
I tried the orange 6120 and a cherry red 6119 then.
Did not like the orange color and the G burn
Did not like the shorter scale
the rose sounded better acoustically
Since then I've upgraded the ceramics for TV jones classics and a Titanium compton bridge.

I found putting a stainless steel radius bridge on mine greatly improved the tone and would advise anyone else to do the same (choice of metal up to you of course).

Which stainless radius bridge did you get?

A Tru-arc, mainly because we have a dealer in the UK, but I should think a Compton would do pretty much the same job.

My first Gretsch. Bought it about 4 months ago. I just can't put this thing down.

I think they're great, and they scream Gretsch. My son was interested in one after I picked up the 6120. He's a Strat player, so the long scale fit him perfectly. Unfortunately, the one he was looking at got snatched out from under us. (That worked out okay, though: he ended up with a Caddy Green Jet, and I wound up buying a Stephen Stills White Falcon.) I love the Roses, though.

The first Gretsch I ever saw was a Tenneseean, back in 1967. They were highly regarded both because of George Harrison and also because it was the lowest prised guitar in the Chet Atkins series and thereby a more viable choice for many players than the Country Gent.

I can't think of any style or context where that model would sound out of place. It really just covers so many bases... I don't play metal, but I suspect it would even do that well.

Definitely a 6119 T/Rose will do whatever you want it to do. I recomend having the filtron pickups. BeachBum has the right idea, a T/Rose with a Fender Twin amp, as that is what I have only I split out and have two Twins. Great setup. Make sure new or used to check it out completely. Doesn't hurt to have someone who knows Gretsches take a look see with you.
