Hollowbody lovers who own jets?
Hello All.
Im considering a penguin and need some input.
Ive been playing hollowbodys and acoustics exclusively for the last 10 years or so.
Ive recently been gasn for a new piece. I tried a les paul dc and didnt dig it. It was a 24 fret and it felt odd for the playable necklength: body size ratio.
Next I picked up a 6120jr and absolutely loved it. I liked having those 2 extra frets on a hollowbody and the size was nice while still being fully hollow.
So the Jrs are kind of rare and Im looking at jets for the comparable size to the Jrs.
At the moment I have an 01 6120SSU stock, and a 5125 w/the Dearmond2ks. Ive got my eye on a '11 penguin w/Dynas
As a lover of big hollowbodies my Question to my hollowbody lovn brethren who own jets is...
What do you get from your jets that you dont get in your HBs
How if at all are they alike to your HBs. Can you dial in similar tones?
And regarding Dynas...I Had a friend who had a Dyna roundup and said he had trouble getting a good dirty tone.
Said it was too clean or somethin of that sort.... Any merit to that? I am looking for something I can get my rock on with.
Are the Dynas similar at all to the Dearmond 2ks? I dial those in pretty well.
Thanks

I have a G5125 and a G6128TCG. I love 'em both.
If you can dial in the DeArmond 2000 pickups, you won't have any trouble with the DynaSonics. A reminder: the DeArmond 2000s in your G5125 are not DeArmond 2k pickups. The 2ks are closer to P90s. The 2000s are closer to heaven.
The Duo Jet lets me get closer to my amp without howling in protest. Tones are similar, but not quite the same. The Dynas can really growl. They sound very, very good clean, but there's a visceral appeal to getting down'n'dirty with them. The DeArmonds sound fantastic with pedals, but a raging tube amp will make my G5125 tremble and quake long before I get the growl happening. The Dyna Jet seems to love getting touchy-feely with a loud tube amp. The G5125 has a vibrant alive feeling that the Jet doesn't have.
I love 'em both.

Pretty much what Lats said.Dynas take some playing with and tweaking.I had my pups waxed then bought foam spacers from TVJones to raise them, readjusted the mags to balance them out.The bridge was REALLY clean and the neck was super bassy...no balance.Since I did all the adj. everything is balanced and the volume from the pups are much better.

I'm a 5127 and 6129tls owner... I played a Gibson es-340 for about 18 years. The Jet is my favorite gutiar... might be of all time.
Of course, for my Sparkle Jet, part of it is the look. But it also has Filters in it, which gives me something different than my 5127. I am gassing for a black dyna equipped jet to add to the herd somewhere down the line. The Jet gives that lack of feedback on stage thing. But, it's also incredibly light. Both of which make it an extremely nice live guitar! I was fighting some feedback Saturday with my 5127... and there's one joint I play all the time that if I stand in front of the mic stand, it get's to howling something fierce! And I don't play with much overdrive kicking.
As for Dynas and dirt... I bet that LATS is right, if you can kick the Dearmonds, you'll probably get along fine with Dynas.

I have a 6121 with dynas and a 6120 dsw.
The 6121 has more attack in the sound but slightly less of a woody tone.
The 6120 is a deeper but softer sound, which you'd expect with the big body.
They compliment each other well.
Overdriven they can get very aggressive, I dial the tone pot back a fraction and they're just right.
I also have '2000's in a 5129, that sounds similar to the dsw but with less depth? But there may be other factors involved in the differece.

I pulled the trigger on the penguin.
Imnot sure about the aesthetics, but the price was worth it. It was supposedly traded in by someone who won it.
I hate buying from GC. Feels like buying from walmart or something,
But their return policy is nice, especially when you cant even test most models if you're rural.
Ideally I was looking for a leatherbound roundup. I dig the western theme. But Im kinda dign the potential visual dichotomy of a Death Rock Cowboy with one of these. Hopefully my inmpatience pays off and I fall in love with the bird.

You can make dynas dirty no problem. Even with a compton I find my dyna equipped solid body guitar has less sustain thang hollow body due to the power of the magnets vs the filtertrons. But cranking up the compressor helps fix that. The solid allows for higher fret access. Which is very nice. I am disappointed in the difficulty of reaching the extreme high frets though, like 20-22. I also find that the neck joint is really big on the solid body. I expected it to be smaller. I would love to have a 24 fret jet with better high fret access. Maybe if I ever get the money I can get a custom.
Also the fret wire on my solid seems bigger than my hollowbody. I am having trouble getting low action on it without the strings ringing on the frets through the amp. It's annoying. But the guitar still sounds great. Both guitars are very versatile, fingerpicking to shredding.
