Solid State Rectifier for 5AR4, 5U4, 5Y3 Tubes

T-SSR01

Solid State Rectifier Direct plug-in replacement for 5AR4, 5U4 and 5Y3 rectifier tubes in amplifiers with center tapped secondary power transformer.

Use when less "sag" is desired in the power supply; just switch back to the tube rectifier when "sag" is desired.

NOTE! Because there is no warm up of a rectifier tube when using this solid state device, it is critical that a standby switch is used that will allow the power tube filaments to warm up and generate an electron "cloud" around the cathode before high voltage is applied. This will prevent "cathode stripping" in the power tubes. It is a good idea to use a standby switch when using vacuum tube rectification, but it is critical when using solid state rectification.

An electric guitar amplifier for playing in a small ensemble of roots or early rock styled/influenced music. Preferably hitting the early stage of vacuum tube distortion at a level that is appropriate for the performance and contains a "reverberation" effect (reverb for short). Often times an amplifier with "Tremolo" effect as well.

He must be playing arena gigs. Either that or he needs to get a drummer with more control.

Playing the game.

A Peavey Nashville, it's loud, transparent enough so the tone of the guitar shines through.

On the downside, if your a week player your weeknesses will be in the forefront. If your playing has no soul the amp has no soul.

The downside is the reason I love it. Makes you a better player.

+1 to that. Works for every early breaking up tube amp.

+1 to that. This would go for most good clean guitar sounds. You've got to be on to play with that level of transparency. I love it.

LOL, I crack up at how awesome I sound when I get behind a shred rig.

Dude that bassman should be fine... Do what Tavo or Jeff-O says, or anything in-between.

Otherwise, Twin.

Laney VC50 - very clean , very loud.

Very cheap!! Just stick in some V30's and new valves.

A bassman isn't loud enough?

Angle your your amp away (or towards your drummer ) so you can get him to adjust his playing dynamics.

And do the lower gain preamp tube thing to keep it cleaner.

Or go for the twin reverb.

And possibly, your amp needs to be checked out that it's in good working order.

I've got a silverface bassman 50 into a 8 ohm 4x10 cab, and it's LOUD and clean. 50 watts into that cab can move a LOT of air.

btw.. ever play through a polytone mini-brute? I cant personally appreciate solid state amps for anything but acoustic guitar and bass but there's no denying that jazz staple of a carved top jazzbox and a polytone

oh and 'Sage let us know what you are gonna do with that amp, I'd love to help out and keep your rockabilly gear "really rockabilly"
I've seen Polytone Mini Brute III's going for $125. What a bargain! I thought I was getting a steal at $200 (delivered).

Tron may be on to something. Maybe a quick service and new tubes. Bassmans are loud!

Secondly they really need to operate with a closeback cab and using speakers that can handle at least 30watts a side preferably heavy doped with large magnets and voice coils Ala Vintage 30s.

(if you are using a tweed bassman, the tube rectifier needs to be swapped for a solid state rectifier and the info below may partially apply)

Change the tubes to KT66 powertubes or military spec 7591...

these will fit but the chassis will probably have to be slid out first
like I said in the beginning of this thread

What do you have for preamp tubes in there?
When was the last time it was serviced?
What type of cab are you running it through?

Indeed. I have a front loading closed back cab. I'm not sure if its a 70's Fender or not as its a bit different in size from the various 2x12's I know of. I have a 12" Weber Cali and a 10" Ragin Cajun in it.

I agree, take Tavo's advice and hold out before getting a bigger amp. A 45 watt bassman SHOULD cover a little more ground for you. I believe that Electro Harmonix (EHX), sells those solid, copper solid state rectifier tube replacements. And, indeed, they are supposed to eliminate sag in tube rectified amps. I have no direct experience with these though.
