The Yamaha SG-3 has switching patterned after the Fender Jazzmaster. But the ergonomics are much more comfortable than anything from Brand F. The slide switch near the upper horn selects either the normal pickup selector and the Master Tone & Volume controls, or the neck pickup with the Tone & Volume settings of the roller controls near the slide switch. The SG-2 has the same setup, with 2 single coil pickups.
The SG-3 has an additional single coil pup mounted in an oversize housing with the bridge pickup. An extra roller control adjusts the balance between the two bridge pickups for extra tonal options.
Until I got the G6128TCG, this was my go-to axe.

Yamaha makes really good stuff. It's strange nobody talks about it much.

It's a bit like the Electromatic line. Yamahas just aren't considered to be 'professional' instruments. My first 'real' guitar, back in '68, was a Yamaha SG-2. Just like that solid-body guitar in the third photo, but with 2 single coil pickups instead of three. I was young, broke, and foolish, so I ended up butchering it to install some crappy humbuckers. Lost track of it long, long ago. I have two of them now. I found a sorry-looking beater on eBay. When I asked people on the forum I was frequenting at the time for help in finding parts for it, one guy put me onto a relatively fresh one in a pawn shop in Winnipeg. So I bought it too.
I have 8 Yamaha guitars, and they're all great. My #1 guitar now is my beloved G6128TCG. Its noticeably better in some aspects. But then it cost three times as much as most of my other guitars, so it should be.
About the only Yamaha left on my list is an old SG-12. A 12-string version of the SG-3 in the photo. I still have a flyer for it from 1967. Price then: $250 Canadian.
