Any other Indie Rockers?
So, confession time. I'm on the Gretsch forum and I don't really enjoy blues, or country, or RnB, or Rockabilly, or the other Billys. I like bands like Radiohead and Coldplay and Deathcab for Cutie. Textural, melodic stuff. And I lurve the Gretsch for that stuff! Actually, while I'm confessing, I have to say I actually get a bit bored by too much guitar music. In fact, my idea of hell is one of those guitar festivals.
Anyway, I don't say this out of any disrespect whatsoever. I love guitars, and I'm loving this site, and I believe in freedom of musical taste. And I'm willing to branch out and learn. I just wondered if there's anyone else out there like me who feels a little like an outsider here in terms of their musical tastes?

Ah. Oh well. I worked in a music shop for three years and had to learn to put up with it. A looooot of blues scales.

I am not into rockabilly and stuff like that. "Indie" is a pretty wide expression as someone can play ajust about anything and call it indie when having a broad reportoire of different stuff. Me like! :-)

you're not the only one. i'm an indie guy too. death cab, radiohead... hell yeah. and i do like some garage blues/rock as well. i'm only here because i got a gretsch one day and i've loved gretsch guitars ever since. i didn't realize they were so strongly attached to all this country stuff...

You're not alone!
I like all things rock, so Radiohead, Placebo & Coldplay back to The Clash, back to Pink Floyd, Beatles, Stones, Bowie etc... and all things in between.. I draw the line at NIN/Tool.. I don't like the heavier stuff
That said, I'll enjoy anything that isn't top40, rap, or modern jazz.. (I love a bit of classical, and some world folk music - bluegrass, gamelan, etc) but when given the choice, I'll be playing ROCK!

Wow, Tara, that's pretty eclectic! Good on you. Btw, I heard that Johnny Greenwood from Radiohead occasionally busts out his Tennessee Rose, though I've never seen it. I like folk music too. That's largely for nostalgic reasons. My uncle taught me to fingerpick Simon and Garfunkel songs when I was a kid. I'm too old for really heavy stuff. I mean, I'm only 30, but I've always felt too old for heavier stuff.

Thanks Mark!
I'd love to be able to find a pic Mr. greenwood sporting a T-rose, the internet is proving really useless in that regard though - I wonder which albums it's appeared on, I'll be listening out for it now
I'm glad I'm not alone with the heavier stuff, it just isn't melodic to my ears..
No WAY, my 'uncle' taught ME to play S&G as a kid, that's just too freaky!

That would be too scary, Rick would have to be travelling 1200kms between students
Well he's not technically my uncle, I don't have any family here in Oz, but he's a family friend who's known me since I was about 3.. His name's Michael

I just like good music. Or, music that strikes me as good. Genre, cultural origin and era don't really play into it.
My music collection goes all the way back to the 1880s right up to the very present and it covers the globe.

Might be a better idea to do just a general rock group, or it'll just be 2 or 3 of us
I'm already running 3 - Mark, you do it! and when you do, sling me an invite!
(if you don't want to I will, just thought you might have fun running a group)

To quote Duke Ellington when asked what kind of music he likes "the good kind"
I like to think I am in that camp. I go from small combo swing stuff from the 20's and 30's, gypsy and western/ old tyme and folk (not the hippy **** too moany) garage/ mod/ psych/ punk/ ska/ soul/ early R&B/ some classic country/ I had forgotten how good some of the early new wave stuff was. I like some of the new bands that the kids are listening to. the hives, artic monkeys, and a couple of others that I am too old and feeble to think of right now

Well, I did as you (and then Tara) suggested, JB. A Gretsch Rockers group is now active.

And knowing GT-ers better than I do, Tara, I'll let you send some invitations to those you think will want to join, if you like.
