Default Fingernail Care.....?

(This question is buried in the more fingers less pick thread.)

Are there any tricks to keep your nails from wearing and breaking?

Mine are always a mess. They grow the the perfect length then wham..they're gone. I tried using Burts Bees nail and cuticle repair with little or no difference other than no more hang nails. There should be some product out there that strengthens nails that can be used safely on a regular basis.

Buy some Knox gelatin packets and drink it dissolved in water.

Sally Hansen has a nail hardener and strengthener. I have just always worn long acrylic nails; although too long to be condusive to guitar picking and playing.

Semi-ugly but people don't notice - I use 4-6 applications of acrylic nail gel and dip them in clear acrylic nail powder. Builds up a thick coat. It dries fairly translucent and so is not terribly noticable; people I work with and have lunch with regularly haven't noticed. I don't put it on the very back of the nail where it is just growing out.

I've had decent luck with clear Hard As Nails.

My treatment for fingernails is to eat lots and lots of ice cream. I know, it sounds tough, but I'm willing to sacrifice a lot for my art.

I like the way you think.

iodine. Two drops per nail per week and you should be set. I don't worry about them as I like the warmth of finger tip and less finger NAIL, but I hear the iodine is what Chet used to do.

I've heard peeing on your callouses toughtens 'em up. Perhaps that works on nails?
Be sure to apply the pee between sets however, as a courtesy to your audience.

Please report back your findings. I'd like to know.

You guys are wrong. Peeing on your callouses makes them soft.

UREA - one of the key elements of URINE (pee), is know to be a softener.

You must be the guy I saw leaving the men's room without washing his hands.

Jeff's right. Nobody pees on their nails any more. What you need is fresh, warm cow ploppers. The looser, the better. Soak you hands in this for ten minutes every other day. If fresh is not available, one can use mail order cow ploppers and heat them in the microwave.

Before I'd follow these suggestions I believe I'd just sell my guitars and find a "cleaner" hobby!

Ewww!

I find I can wipe the ice cream off my hands with a Kleenex, but if I dribble chocolate ice cream on my shirt, it needs a wash, so I have to be very careful to eat it before it melts. Fortunately, I mastered that technique about 50 years ago. I just have to make sure I have regular practice so I don't forget how to do it.
