Ricky Nelson
For some reason, I was compelled to buy Ricky Nelson’s greatest hits CD and his Canyon Band hits as well.
Wow...great music and his influence is underrated.

And why not, the guy was brilliant. Great voice, great songs.
He was also fortune enough to have one of the best guitarists around playing for him, James Burton.
About four years ago I was compelled too, to record one of his songs, It's Up To You. Had a lot of fun doing it.
Let Ricky Nelson not be forgotten.

yep, he was a great artist and musician. and as Nick said, he had one the best guitar players around playing lead guitar for him, James Burton. a month before I went in the Army in 1971, I went to a concert where Rick Nelson and the Stone Canyon Band opened for Dennis Yost and the Classics IV. they were just getting started and it was before "Garden Party" was released. regertfully, I was more interested in wanting to hear Dennis Yost and the Classics IV and didn't pay too much attention to Rick Nelson. it's a shame, too. I bought the "Garden Party" album when it came out while I was overseas. I love that album. it's got some great songs on it. so, yeah, Rick Nelson was pretty good.

I disagree. I think his twin sons, from the band Nelson, with their matching, beautiful rock girl hair and glorious power ballads made a much greater impact on music and rock in general. Monster Ballads for sure. Those two are golden gods worthy of inclusion amongst the ranks of Olympus.

The Garden Party song's story is pretty interesting... I remember my brother getting a Classics IV LP. Man, I have to dig back into the archives. Who was Dennis Yost?

Hello Mary Lou is a rockabilly song that holds with anything the boys from Sun Records did. James Burton really laid it down for everyone on those original Ricky Nelson cuts. I can only assume HLT is horsing around...

Yeah I agree with you Bob M.
Times you remember: and I'll never forget hearing Mary Lou for the first time. And that solo too...the song still sounds fresh even today.

Dennis Yost was the lead singer for the Classics IV. he was a very nice guy. I met him a few months later in 1971 in Augusa, Georgia when I was stationed at Fort Gordon, Georgia. sadly, he passed away a couple of years ago.
I hope that this gives you an idea of who he was.
now let's not "hijack" this thread and get back to Rick Nelson.

Wow, both Spooky and Stormy! Two of my old favorites, though I think I was inundated with a lot of cover versions my older sisters used to get, a lot of originals, but a lot of covers back in the day.

Yes, one of the great rock and roll pioneers with one of the greatest guitar players. I love the break in Believe In What You Say. When JB lets loose right up the neck. Gets me every time. Arf

Gene Pitney was a talented guy, but Rick Nelson's version of 'Hello Mary Lou' has got to top all comers!
The J.B. solo in that song is a beautiful thing all on its own. I read once that Brian May of Queen considered it to be one of the best crafted lead solos of all time.
Can't confirm that, but it is fun to play. It just feels so 'right'.

Arf,
My apologies for placing Gene Pitney in the present tense.
Ricky Nelson was, of course one of the 'manufactured' teen idols of the early 60's. His fame arose from his presence in 'The Nelsons' TV show. He was backed by great studio musicians, though, and had enough talent to transcend the box that they (his father, mainly) wanted to put him in.

I think Burton wasn't playing in the Stone Canyon Band....or else he'd be dead, just like the rest of the Band that went down in that ****ty plane Ricky bought off of Jerry Lee Lewis .
