Brilliant. Some of my favorite guitar sounds of all time are on their records.

Pardon me for introducing a wry observation - there was not one guitar in that video clip.

You're right. I forgot he'd play a bass guitar often.

why would he be joking? they had some incredible, really innovative guitar. a lot of strange tunings, guitars with only two strings, ect.

Never like 'em much myself, but this thread made me go back and listen to a song or two. You're right - not that they were Jimi Hendrix skilled, but neat tones and clever riffs.

I never really appreciated them till I saw them live at a corporate party. I work for a pretty big company and they hired them to play at our big meeting a few years back. We were all on a big aircraft carrier in San Francisco Bay. Anyway, they were awesome live. A great party band. I immediately went home and learned Rock Lobster.

never thrilled with their overt gay agenda but I loved that band and the guitar tones were
incredible. I was a kid with my race skates at the roller rink and Rock Lobster would come on and I would race my ass off to that song and the guitar was completely punk rock. It was so weird and aggressive in a non traditional way. Probably why I loved devo at that time too. ..what was that tune "girl you want" or something, the guitar was bad ass when pumped through the massive sound system at Roller City 2001

On the contrary, it wasn't overtly gay enough!

Loved the first album! I remember when it first came out it was constantly spun in every "cool" shop in SF.
But as a group I guess they became like a novelty act to me. They never really grew. And I never bought a second B52 album.

Gay was running out of the speaker.......not there is any thing wrong with that!
PS: I suspect Elton John may be gay......not that there's anything wrong with that!

He he. I seem to recall reports of their concert goers getting a 30 minute lecture on LGBT matters a few years ago. I'm not judging that so much, but I would have been saying, "I paid for music. I can get this lecture at school..."

I think I just found my new band name! That's hilarious - conjures images of the B52s, Michael Stipe, that girl from the coffee shop with the pink triangle button, and Neil Patrick Harris all meeting in some darkened room with a map of the world on the wall, working out the "gay agenda."
But the B52s, yeah. To me they're all about summer sun and summer fun - but that probably has more to do with the contexts where I've heard their music than with the music itself. As was already mentioned: great party band!
