Default Heard A Song I Haven't Heard In Twenty Years

Yesterday I heard a song I haven't heard in 20 years. I guess my radio stations were never on a station that would play it. What surprised me was that it was a pleasant popular song all those years ago but now, due to the putrid state of popular music, I realized just how fantastic, well written, well played, and wonderful the song was.

The song was "Wildfire" by some Michael Murphy something. Everyone knows it but it took today's horrendous state of music for me to realize just how special that song is and how special of a time it was to grow up when pop music was well-crafted, moving, and damn good.

We would get songs like "Wildfire" constantly on the radio and on the charts. I know I sound like a grumpy old-fogey but I guarantee you that 20 years from now no one is going to be sitting at their computer praising an old Lady Gaga song.

Here's an absolutely incredible version of a great blast from the past:

Love the song. Only goofy part is the lyrics about a killing frost. Killing frost kills your plants not a horse.

That is a good song. I haven't heard that in forever!

I was reading the lyrics after drmilktrucks comments. I had never done so.

So, did the girl die in a blizzard? Just the horse? Both of them? And they're coming back for him years later like a "ghost rider"?

I had never paid attention, but it's like, sorta creepy!

Quite the flashback. I remember when this was a hit.

The killing frost didn't kill Wildfire, he ran off in a blizzard and got lost!

Yeah, but did the girl get lost too?! How come they're both coming back for him at the end?!

It's like "little footprints in the snow" or "dig a hole in the meadow". Sounds like a nice enough tune 'til you read the lyrics!

I think he is suffering from severe cabin fever or he is on drugs or he is dying.
Yeah dying is the most logical explanation and the ghost horse and girl are there to take him into the eternal lasting, nah he's high!

He's from Victoria, Texas about 90 miles from San Antonio. I've seen him twice - once by himself and once with his Sagebrush Symphony production. He's one of the best Cowboy/Americana performers. Have all of his CD's.

Really? Well, that's worth looking in to for sure! Love that kind of stuff. From Bill Monroe through Waylon. Good ol' real cowboy stuff.

Regarding the lyrics.
I wouldn't call them creepy. More haunting and ultimately uplifting in a way.

The song certainly shouldn't be taken literally, but the facts that I get are:
- the girl dies,
- Wildfire can't go on without her and runs off in a blizard,
- then the guy dies,
- then both girl and guy are together forever riding Wildfire leaving the hard times (life) behind.

"Wildfire"

She comes down from Yellow Mountain
On a dark, flat land she rides
On a pony she named Wildfire
With a whirlwind by her side
On a cold Nebraska night

Oh, they say she died one winter
When there came a killing frost
And the pony she named Wildfire
Busted down its stall
In a blizzard he was lost

She ran calling Wildfire [x3]

By the dark of the moon I planted
But there came an early snow
There's been a hoot-owl howling by my window now
For six nights in a row
She's coming for me, I know
And on Wildfire we're both gonna go

We'll be riding Wildfire [x3]

On Wildfire we're gonna ride
Gonna leave sodbustin' behind
Get these hard times right on out of our minds
Riding Wildfire

He used to put on a Cowboy Festival at
Cooper Mountain in Colorado every year.

Don't know if he still does.

I saw him in the late 60's-early 70's. Puts
on a great live performance.

Wildfire busts out of his stall and runs out into a blizzard, followed by the girl calling his name. "Wildfire come back you stupid hoss, wait til i get my hands on you."

well i did not enjoy that. not my kinda thing. however i do agree that popular music today leaves much to be desired. i HATE pop punk. has nothing to do with punk rock... it's just pop with guitars.

Been on my iPod since day 1
Here is another of his I like...
This version doesn't have one of my fave lines..
If there are three men in cowboy hats in a truck, how can you tell which one is the real cowboy?

It's the one in the middle, cuz he doesn't have to drive, and he doesn't have to open the gate.

I have buddies who listen to that good ole Country 'n Western stuff all the time: we have a blast whenever they do! But sometimes it gets gruesome - especially when they pull out William Shatner doing his rendition of "Lucy in the Sky, With Diamonds.

There's a funny book called Touch Me, I'm Sick: The 52 Creepiest Love Songs You've Ever heard. (Not as good though as the author's other book, I Hate Myself and Want to Die:the 52 most depressing songs.)
